You just described me in a nutshell.

Liberal military brat here, that knew to immediately stop everything at 5:00 pm when "To The Color" or the National Anthem was played over all of the loudspeakers while lowering the flag on base and cover my heart while looking toward the Command Center building.

Vehicles also stopped and those in uniform saluted.
