The public's perception of mental illness goes back to the Dark Ages. Believe or don't believe it but our illegal drug loving society plays a role in the worsening of these mental health diseases and that's why more and more pop up.

If you cry out for control forget gun control and begin controlling by putting pressure on politicians to enact severe drug trafficing laws tightening our border from the illicit drug trade, and enacting a mental health systems that allows family to interact with the mental health medical community in the same manner as any other illness. Mental health facilities are inept and abuses are found just as in old age facilities . Again stronger laws with responsible oversight of such facilities are needed. But none of this can be accomplished until and unless people change their perception of mental illness. As it stands now we have more people who care about the treatment of pets than we do human beings left vulnerable but these illnesses.
Very well said.

The man also belonged to the KKK. He was mentally ill and his family knew it. Mental illness is nothing to make fun of or bring a group such as the tea party into the conversation when that has absolutely nothing to do with his mental state. Is your mental OK these days? The only conversation this should bring to the forefront is the mentally ill should of course not be allowed to possess guns So where did this fall through the cracks and who is to blame for that??

Why is it that the status (good, bad or indifferent) is always a forefront issue in gun ownwership/possession?

The discussions are too often influenced and limited by what the media, partisans, special interest groups and minorities make headlines about. And we ALL know how biased, self limiting and not neccessarily true that information is.

How about raising the bar and take into account all the other aspects in the life of a mentally ill person that are equally potential dangers, or more so, to themselves and the rest of the population?

Guns are a political hot button resulting in no gain for anybody and just a bunch of partisan arm waving hollering. Mental illness should not be!

Something positive you can do in this regard. Contact your Sumter, Marion, and Lake County library and law enforcement agencies and have them evaluate the currency, practicality, and range of materials on survivors/victims of crimes as well as even more importantly what they have about mental illness like links to various associations which help those with mental illness, anger management, PTSD, and other things important. Get the mental illness associations and survivor/victim assistance agencies and professionals involved in the dialog.

learn to ignore the hate mongers and radicals that would use mental health as a lever to pursue their position....and could care less about the mental health issue.

Gee, the tea party people got mighty defensive didn't they. So unhappy about why anyone would think that the political environment which the killer endorsed has anything to do with his decision to act out. Of course it was the original poster who immediately jumped to the possibility that this killing was done by a Muslim because that is what he or she apparently thinks of first when there is a mass shooting. However, and correct me if I am wrong, except for targeted shootings of military personnel, have there been indiscriminate shootings in this country by a Muslim?

So next time there is a mass civilian shooting, think right wing gun nut first, not Muslim. You'll get some wrong but you'll improve your batting average.

So, 59 year old white man, angry about social changes in the country, failed marriage, domestic violence, involuntarily committed to a mental hospital, not approved for CCL, and yet buys a gun legally at a pawn store?

Sounds like the next poster boy for the NRA campaign against gun control.

And if he had killed several people and injured several more with his automobile while drunk or high on drugs, who's fault would it be?

Nothing new here, typical talking liberal talking points - blame the NRA and not the individual.

Yup! Their response upon hearing the word gun is as creative as pulling the strings in a dolls neck!

Dear Guest: a number of years ago a woman with mental illness drove her car to a pier pushed it over into the water with her three children in it drowning them. a few years later a woman who had a boyfriend that wasn't up to inheriting three kids along with his new girlfriend did exactly the same thing drowning her three kids so that she could keep her boy friend.

a person with mental illness can attach themselves to any group and or dislike any group it doesn't matter and their is no logic to it.

The person that is the subject of this thread could have easily obsessed about being a muslim, a jew, a vigilante that doesn't matter what mattered is he needed treatment because the brain's filtering system is not working

The guy from Colorado who shoot all of those people in the theater was declared sane when he committed that crime. However what person in their right mind no matter how well planned plans to kill so many people?
Does a suicide bomber who plans out so carefully to wear and vest and walk into a public establishment sound rational to you?

And if one reflect honestly and objectively they would recall that rational people for irrational ideas or greed or revenge or power have killed gangsters, spouse who wants an insurance policy or has a new found lover and their spouse is in the way, etc. etc. etc.

Personal Best Regards:

Typical Alinsky response of trying to deflect the question.

...and your point is? MY point is even though this man, angry at the world, served with a restraining order, history of domestic abuse, had been involuntarily committed to a mental hospital, denied a CCL, that he was STILL able to LEGALLY buy a handgun from a pawnstore. Definitely, he has to be the poster boy for the NRA.

Dear Guest:

My point is that you will not get a knee jerk reaction from me. What you will get is that all of the points that you make concerning this man fit the profile I offered in my explanation of an inapt mental health community, laws etc.

As to legally buying a gun bear in mind that despite the efforts of Homeland Security NSA etc terrorist still slip in and out and pointing to the fact that he bought a gun is not the issue. the issue is he was not given the proper care and/or confinement and treatment so that he would not believe that a gun was necessary.

Why is it people keep skipping over the issues of substance? a delusional woman used her car to drown three children, a delusional man shoots innocent people because. a delusional woman is fitted with a suicide vest and blows up herself and as many people as she can take with her. a delusional man arms himself with a machete and stands out on the street threatening people. a person with depression hangs himself or jumps off a bridge............................................ .......................
