Since 80% of the world's scientists - a proven fact - believe climate change is real and that mankind can and has affected our climate I'll go with the majority. All these charts which are incomprehensible to us non-scientists don't convince me one bit.

My response was to post 4. It was intended to sound over-reactive to the claim made in post 4. Sarcasm? Yes? But with a note of truth about future energy needs as old technologies become more antiquated, costly and inefficient.
Yes. I do derive income (a few hundred $, not thousands) from fossil fuels. I have a small, undivided percentage of oil land in Texas. As I have stated in the past, that while I do receive income from oil, that income does not blind me to the fact that there are alternative energy sources which are superior in many ways. Like an old man, which I am, enjoying a donut that he knows is not healthy or good for him, I can accept my dietary failing, but still in good conscience advocate for a healthy diet for one and all. I could sell my small share, but that wouldn't really solve anything. The extraction would continue and some one else would get the check. If I get the check, I can still afford the occasional donut with my senior coffee. Black, no cream or sugar, thanks.

As to your question, what makes you think most scientists believed the world was flat before Galileo? It was pretty well figured out long before.
As for giving scientists a pass? No. They, like everyone else, have to earn it.
Lastly, I believe your quote is incorrect and, thusly, misleading due to the context you associated it with. I believe the quote should be, "Four out of five dentists surveyed recommend Crest toothpaste to their clients".
