Thanks to someones' post on here, we were able to find golf cart insurance for the golf cart at our rental unit (Allstate). They tell me that we are not permitted to advertise the golf cart as being included in the rental or included in a photograph with the house. They also said that there are ways to add it to the description of the house but wouldn't tell me how to do it. I guess I'm just not clever. Has anyone had the same issue and come up with a solution?

You could probably say something in the description that there is a golf cart that is available for renters to use or something to that effect. I think the big problem would be that you wouldn't be able to check off that a cart is available in the amenity feature, which means that renters looking for specifically for properties with a cart would miss yours. It is a fine line right now. Be very sure that your rental price stays the same whether the cart is used or not.

The policy language strips coverage from an insured vehicle when it is rented to others. The agent is trying to circumvent the rental exclusion by more less "pretending" the use of the cart isn't contingent on signing a rental contract for the house. So don't mention the golf cart anywhere and hope if something happens the folks in the Allstate claim department don't get to involved into investigating the circumstances surrounding the use of the golf cart.
If you don't have something in writing from this agent that states under the conditions of your rental agreement for the property, the renters use of the golf cart is covered, you are bound by the policy language which states there isn't coverage if the cart is rented to others. Arguably, if the use of the cart is conditioned upon you renting the property, the golf cart is part of the rental agreement. Typical agent trying to use smoke and mirrors to extend coverage beyond the terms of the policy to satisfy his insureds |

Wow, this is interesting. And kind of scary. Seems like if I'm renting and my renters get involved in an accident, I'm really going to be sweating out whether or not the insurance company will pay up.
has anyone out there had this happen? |

SURPRISE !!! the rental cart companies don't have insurance, and if you drive one other than on the golf course, you are un-insured.

i am betting that if there is an accident...there will be a way to not cover it...still waiting for some company to come up with golf cart with rental..policy every one would go with that company, because it would be in writing. I think this is a policy to make you feel better as long as nothing happens

I think that we ever rent our place, we'll rent WITHOUT a cart. Not comfortable with the uncertainty here. You do the right thing and buy insurance but need to keep your fingers crossed that a future claim would be honored. This could be financially devastating.
Anyone know...is this just Allstate? |

This, IMHO, is a topic that would be good fodder for a newspaper article. People should be aware of this. Presumably, everyone advertising their rental property with a golf cart included is at risk. Don't even bother buying insurance.

Ask the agent to provide either specific policy language that spells out your owned cart is insured if used by renters. If it's not in the policy have them provide something in writing clearly explaining it's covered. It's imperative you have this in writing. The standard policy will exclude coverage. Where exactly is it written stating there is in fact coverage.
Go back to what the OP on this thread was told. It's can't be advertised. Oh really, allegedly the only company that will insure rented golf carts doesn't want anybody to know about it. Does that make any sense at all. So the fewer policies Allstate sells the happier they are? Then they go on to tell their insured there are ways to add it to the house but we just can't tell you about it, really! Para legals research it? That's nonsense. The simple response is to ask the agent or agents staff person to put all of this in writing. Since it must happen all the time, wouldn't they have a form clearly explaining all this. The only written document you have is the Allstate policy. If it's not in there, where is the language granting coverage? |

The scary thing is that if we made a claim and they wouldn't cover it, they have more and bigger lawyers than we have. |

There have been several posts on this topic. We found inexpensive golf cart insurance that covers our renters through Robert Blakley Insurance in Leesburg. We register each tenant on the policy and they get coverage along with us. I charge $50 for the insurance, which is a good deal to have use of a cart for the duration of the rental. There is little chance of coverage denial as the policy is specifically for this and there is no fancy wording in my rental to include coverage. This reduces risk for both the renter and us.
