It's priced by the foot plus labor to install. Also depends on how fancy you want the crown. Too many unknowns to answer this question. Could be as much as .55 per foot to install on top of fancy crown, maybe $2.50 per foot or way more (as drdodge said, maybe up to $6.00). This example in a 15 X 15 room would be about $183.00

Some garden variety crown can be around $1.25 per foot, but the labor is still the same regardless of how expensive the molding is.

Thank you for the replies. The only quote we got (so far) was for about $8.00 per foot when we factored in the painting and sealing that had to be done by a painter. That would be about $1,800 for what we wanted done. We thought that was a little high so we are still looking.

There was an add running in the Daily Sun for crown moulding. When you went to their website, it gave prices for all Village models. We have the Juniper and the price was approx, $2,250. that was for moulding in all the rooms. I am sorry, I don't have the name with me, we are in NY at the moment.

My next door neighbor just had crown molding installed in her house by this company and it is absolutely beautiful. The work was completed in one day....installation and painting. Another neighbor is having this company do the crown molding at her house, tomorrow.

Is that company pricey? Can't say for sure but the results seem worth the cost. I believe the molding is MDF...a good choice since it doesn't warp. Where pieces are joined together...you can't see. The wood used is up to 16 feet long so there are fewer seams and as I said, it seems impossible to find where pieces joined.

I just went to their website which states they only use wood products in their FAQ section. They have a section where you can view photographs of work they've completed. Their work looks flawless and their prices are excellent! I just bookmarked the page for a future reference.

You need to also read the fine print where these prices are for 4 1/4 inch crown in the family rooms and 3 5/8 inch in the bedrooms. In some of the larger designers that have the 10 foot elevated ceilings in the entry foyers, family/dining and kitchen areas, I think you need 5 1/4 inch crown, minimum, which would add to your cost....albeit the majority of cost is in labor. However the wider the crown the harder to cut and install especiallly angled ceilings. We used B&J Builders to install our 5 1/4inch crown moulding and it is beautiful and well worth the cost.

I agree with 784caroline about the width of the molding. The higher the ceiling, the wider the molding should be. B&J also did ours. Ruth Dyer (the decorator who writes a column in the Daily Sun recommends 7" molding for 10' ceilings and I have to agree with her, too, unfortunately too late for us.

I realize that the ad states a smaller width crown molding, but you might just get a discount right now.
One neighbor had the 5 inch in their great room and the 4+ inch in the rest of the house.

Tomorrow's job is scheduled for all 5+ molding. Don't believe the cost was more or too much more. One can ask for a deal....most contractors are willing to offer some deals right now because of the slowdown many are experiencing.

The point of my post was 2 fold 1) most of us buy crown moulding once or twice in our lifetime and dont have much experience in doing so. Therefore one would not know the difference in the size of crown moulding and how it fits into a room, and 2) make certain when one is getting price estimates. you need to get prices on comparable work (5 1/4 to 5 1/4...not
4 1/4).

Agree all contractors are willing to "discuss" price...some more than others and it definitely pays to shop around.

Talked with my friend today, and she is having the 5+ throughout the house and the cost is in the ballpark of what's on the website....and it isn't MDF being used, it's solid wood. They are working as I type. Can't wait to take a look when the installation is completed.

I have seen my model done with larger molding, 8+ inches I believe it was. Personally, I prefer the 5+ for myself. Could have to do with how I have my house decorated. I agree it's a choice you make wisely since it goes up once.
