In light of the recent break ins and attempted break ins we have been wondering about motion detector lights. We have heard that there are even those powered by solar panels.

Have any of you had motion detector lights installed? If so where on your home? Do you mind sharing the cost? It would also be good to have a recommendation for the contractor you used to install them. Did any of you install them yourself?

Any information would be appreciated. Many of our neighbors are very interested as well.

I don't live in TV yet but do live on a golf course so the back of my home is private and isolated. We did put in a sensor security light when we built our home and this converted to a solar sensor light. Any movement turns on the light which is located by the outside of the screened porch door. It lights up a normally very dark area and makes me feel safer.

GG, I had solar motion detector lights installed just the other day by our VERY CAPABLE Handieman himself. He put two spotlights in my birdcage and lanai. They are wonderful. I would highly recommend Handie. Come over to see them..

Before we left Indiana, I was looking at lights at Sams club that came on with motion and took a picture. You would download the camera on your laptop to see what caused the lights to come on. My son in law has one at the back of his property to take pictures of deer, and other wildlife that wonder past. It works very well. I haven't been able to look at Sams Club down here yet to see if they have them. If they do, I will have one.

The lights are not solar powered, they are powered by AC from a nearby receptacle. They also are "dual brightness" security lights in that they come on at dusk at half brightness (flood) and when they detect movement they rise to full brightness. If one chooses the wattage carefully the low brightness level will flood the area with dim light and surprise anyone who comes within the area with full brightness. The effect is that, from the inside of the home, someone detected a noise or movement outside and turned the lights on.

Home Depot has some solar powered motion lights that are very easy to install. Check their web site. We bought one, installed it in 10 minutes and it works great.

Handie, will a motion light work if it is located inside a birdcage, or does it have to be outside?

I can't speak for HANDI but in my opinion it will work fine ......

however having said that , If the light flickers on and off a lot , then you'll have to take the BIRD out.........

If you install them or have them istalled make sure the fixtures are palced up high Where they can't be reached without getting on a ladder I had them on my garage in Long Island and they were only only about 6 feet off the ground
