When we first moved to Florida, I realized, at least for me, there were no "good hair days". I would leave the house looking fairly good, only to arrive at the party looking like I arrived on a broom. 24 years later, I have yet to find a decent hair style that is becoming.

I have been searching for a demo of how these can be secured to my super fine hair. |
Star that is so very depressing :ohdear:. We will find a way m'dear and I will keep you posted. Worst case we will have matching buzz cuts.:1rotfl:
Seriously there has got to be a way to look good in humidity. The wet cat look is so 'yesterday'. Hmmm when I think about it my wet cat look isn't so scrawny looking anymore either. Gotta find a waterproof hair style. |
'DOs' and don'ts
Obviously, I have natural curly hair. Of course I wanted straight hair. I used to fight it and hot iron, steam, pull, straighten. An hour later the ringlets would reappear! It was a useless never ending battle. It is so much easier to let it do whatever it wants. Golf cart hair is the worst!!! Men have it so much easier. Keep it short or shave it off!! At this point in life, WHO CARES!! Whatever your 'do', just be you! :icon_wink:
|
I went to that website Shirlee. They have some very interesting items there.
I think what I am going to do is check around here for a store where I could go in and try one on. Is there such a place in TV or nearby? We will be there in Feb. I am not in any hurry, cause it won't be humid here till next summer. Thanks for the lead. Have you used it? |

Look what I found for the "heat" issue.
http://www.wigs.com/product_info.php?products_id=3640 They also have how to videos on the far right side of the site page. |
I have shared! Locks of Love, about 8 years ago. I think a girl trip to a wig shop would be fun!!! Maybe we can do this some day as a group, then lunch, or vise versa. My friend in RIs daughter donates every year. Of course her hair grows like a weed!!! Mine just falls out.
|
Wigs as an excuse to go to lunch...yeaaa. Excellent idea.
|
Do you know about the web site PaulaYoung.com?....(I think).I bought several wigs from Paula Young on line, not expensive and not bad. (After looking like Mr. Clean without them a few years back. I would wear hoop earrings around the house with my orange skin from adriamicin(sp?) and my bald noggin and my family would tease me...) The wigs are hot. Some are more "airy" than others.
Glad to be here. Glad my hair has returned from vacation. This is so much fun. So fun to talk about anything. |
GG,
I bought a clip-on hair piece from Paula Young and it is really nice. Problem? My hair is so fine (when it's humid), that the clip doesn't stay in my hair. It works fine when there is no humidity. Ronda & Susan, lunch sounds great! |
See, that is what I think will happen to me Shirlee. I'll walk out on the dance floor with a full head of well coiffed hair and minutes later return a wet cat that got caught in a lawn mower.
Lunch for all of us who are trying to hold on to "remember when". |

Susan, wet cat caught in a lawn mower, very descriptive. :yuck:
I find that the longer I'm in TV, the less concerned I am about having my hair look good! I highly recommend baseball caps and golf visors .. I always use them for bad hair days. |
Brown paper bags work well too, or so I have heard!
|
Quote:
They're especially good if you haven't had enough sleep and want to hide the dark circles. Multi purpose. |
...and when it is dark enough, that no one can see you, you can use the paper bag to carry your stuff home from the Square. Very versatile.

Smooth Away
There is a product advertised on television for hair removal called Smooth Away.
www.getsmoothaway.com  It looks like a good product and I'm planning to order it. Just wondering if any girls out there have tried it? P.S. I'm still loving my gel nails. |
Nailed it!
Quote:
I have not tried getsmoothaway, but I love, LOVE, my Pedegg. I think that's what it's called. Hope I'm not naming a sex toy of any kind?:a20: |

I'm still looking for information on "Smoothaway". I just know someone out there has watched the infomercial on television and fallen under its spell.
Also, the motorized nail cutters for pets they've been advertising, anyone tried those? And don't tell me I'm watching too much television. I know that already. I never thought I'd be a little old grey-haired lady watching commercials and ordering stuff over the internet. :yuck: Well, I guess I'm a little old dark-haired lady (thanks to Wella) with lovely gel nails watching commercials. Chels, what is a Pedegg? It sounds slightly obscene. And yes, I'm getting a lot of mileage out of my new nails. |
Haven't tried Smoothaway never saw the infomercial til just now on line. I think it sounds like sandpaper or a nail file on a pad. Not so sure about that. Is it exfoilation or a good saning that you would get in addition to the hair removal. Skin is more delicate as we age...I don't know...
I use an Epilady http://www.epilady.com/ Have for years. Same results as those claimed for the Smoothaway. Plus no refills to buy. Now if you still want to try it, I wonder if they might have a booth at the Marion County Markets for TV infomercial items. They do at the Flea Market in Ft. Myers. Let me know. |

Wella, huh. Wella Rulz!!!!!! It is absolutely the only thing that will cover my white hair. Anything else gives it a lovely pink tone because the white is so resistant. I have been springing for Wella for years. When my hair turned pink, or was it mahogany, I broke up with my hairdresser and whatever the heck she used on me. It was in that stage where you need to leave semi-permanent color for permanent color. She kept trying to fix it, but I ran away finally. I hated to do that. I liked her very much as a person, but she failed me as a hairdresser. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, you know. In fact, Barefoot, I think Wella was one of the very first discussions we ever had in the Girl Talk thread when it started months ago. For me, it's Wella of a certain kind (the name looks like the word 'cholesterol' but I can't remember what it is) and some highlights and a Goldwell clear over all of it and I can look like my hair is not a dye-job. Of course, it costs me a blue fortune, and my hair grows so fast, I am there all the time. Maybe I should just go with blue hair instead of spending a blue fortune every month. It sure is a pain to try to look like you have done absolutely nothing to your hair. I think maybe I need to get over it. But that transition period is so hard to go through. I will probably be an old, old, old lady, shriveled up beyond recognition, but still thinking my hair looks so naturally young. (I am so pathetic sometimes. Oh well, at least I know that about myself.) I got an email the other day from a friend who is making the changeover. And guess what. -- I am supposed to tell her if it looks like :censored: Like I'm going to do that. Uh huh. One time I had somebody ask me to let her know if her black, black dye-job started to look like shoe polish. Oh Barefoot, I just cannot tell all these people the truth. Even if they ask me to. They would not speak to me ever again. That's just the way Girl Talk works sometimes. So anyway, there I went again, singing the praises of Wella. But once you have been saved from pink, or was it mahogany hair, you are eternally grateful to that which rescued you. Boomer |
Bad news for dark hair dye users. Good medical research has recently concluded that dark hair color is indeed a carcinogen and the occurence of lymphoma is increased by 28% in those woman who have used dark dyes since 1981. Helene colors her hair and we just discussed yesterday her going blonde.
When she came off chemo the oncologist said to NOT dye her hair for two years after and I was so frightened I didn't ask any questions. Now I am concerned again. Has anyone else read that paper? It was published recently. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578427 |
GG: That is bad news indeed. I've suspected hair dye can't be good for me, using it for so many years, leaking all those chemicals into my scalp. But I've buried my head in the sand, (or in the dye bottle).
Boomer, what are we going to do? |
Being a dark headed person I am very concerned also. I heard something about this quite a few years ago. I know my sister-in-law uses some kind of natural herbal dye, Ill try to find out what it is but believe me it doesnt look that great!
Are we all going to have to become blondes? Good thing my sister-in-law is not on this site! |
Nonie I did like you and the others, I knew it was dangerous and chose color over being grey. Vanity...sigh...oh well there are so many things that can give you cancer in the world what's one more?
As to the blonde thing...my mother taught her girls that women don't go grey, they go blond...we always listen to our mother.;) |
I'm so happy I don't have to color my hair yet. It's surprising because my mother and grandmothers were coloring their hair by the age I am now. Guess I should count my lucky stars.

white hair
My best girlfriend in Miami is my age (70) and she has snow white hair which she keeps very short (like mine) and it looks very striking...... really flattering !! I think a stylish haircut is more important than the color :clap2:
|
I agree with snow white hair looking stunning. Bright white hair is shockingly striking.
However, not all white hair is "snow white". There are some that are more gray dull and some yellowish. Neither are flattering, in my opinion. I agree a good, stylish haircut is essential but the tone of gray hair can take the focus away from the cut. Not many woman are blessed with the beautiful snow white "purist" hair. I hope I am but it's still way too soon to tell. |
Maya Angelou's Best Poem Ever
'MAYA ANGELOU'S'
BEST POEM EVER A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ... enough money within her control to move out and rent a place of her own, even if she never wants to or needs to... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ... something perfect to wear if the employer, or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .. a youth she's content to leave behind.... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE . a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her old age.... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ... a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .. one friend who always makes her laugh.. and one who lets her cry... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ... a goo d piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .. eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal, that will make her guests feel honored... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE a feeling of control over her destiny.. EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... how to fall in love without losing herself.. EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... how to quit a job, break up with a lover, and confront a friend without; ruining the friendship... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... that she can't change the length of her calves, the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents.. EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... that her childhood may not have been perfect...but it's over... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... what she would and wouldn't do for love or more... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.... how to live alone... even if she doesn't like it... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.. . whom she can trust, whom she can't, and why she shouldn't take it personally... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... where to go... be it to her best friend's kitchen table.. or a charming Inn in the woods.... when her soul needs soothing... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.. What she can and can't accomplish in a day... a month...and a year... AND REMEMBER: GOOD FRIENDS ARE LIKE STARS. YOU DON'T ALWAYS SEE THEM, BUT YOU ALWAYS KNOW THEY ARE THERE!!!!!! Be yourself...everyone else is already taken. |
Very inspirational !!
Thanks JoC, wonderful poem. I'm gonna save it on my hard drive, its a great reminder for women...

Re. this hair dye thing: I have Googled the heck out of it. There is a lot of information out there on the studies.
But I have not Googled those studies as much as I have Googled the HRT studies of 2002 I think it was. There have been some follow-ups to those. And some books written about them. When I make a decision, I gather as much information as I can stand to gather and then I make the decision and then I hope it's the right one for me. And JoC, What a great poem. I don't know how I missed that one. Thank you. Boomer |

Boomer, when you gather your information about hair dye and make a decision, inquiring minds want to know the result. Please keep us posted. I agree, JoC, great poem! I find it very soothing. |
I need some help !
So, here I am sitting in front of my computer... at TOTV.... looking out the French Doors at the leaves falling....... and in a sunbeam shining through the glass - I see many particles of ......... DUST !!! OMG! That's what I'm breathing in ?
Sorry to confess...... I don't ever dust anything  but maybe it's time to start ? ya think? Here's where I need some advice, please........ how, or what is the best tool to use ? I've been seeing on television commercials those telescoping Swiffer dust thingies with disposable pads or do you use a spray with a cloth, ? (Don't tell me you have a "maid".... cuz that's gonna be me :yuck: ) DUSTING 101 tips please ........... :yuck: |
Glad to change the subject. I just got a new swiffer dust mop for here in TV and although the floor looked O.K., it sure picked up a lot.
Boomer. When you are googling, check JAMA. |
Dust
Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter, Bake a cake, or plant a seed; Ponder the difference between want and need? Dust if you must, but there's not much time, With rivers to swim and mountains to climb; Music to hear, and books to read; Friends to cherish and life to lead. Dust if you must, but the world's out there With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair; A flutter of snow, a shower of rain, This day will not come around again. Dust if you must, but bear in mind, Old age will come and it's not kind. And when you go (and go you must) You, yourself, will make more dust. Author Unknown |
Well said, as if I needed more excuses.:1rotfl:
