Where's Bill when we need him? Yoo Hoo Bill 'n Brillo!

My first car was a used Nash Rambler..early 60's......

I had just graduated from college....and my father thought I should buy this Rambler.....cute car.....only 1,000 miles on it.

He didn't tell me the part that it was stick shift!!! I'll never forget those early trips going to and from the hospital chugging both ways!

Remember my 1950 Buick Roadmaster with the Dynaflow automatic, black exterior, of course no air conditioning, and manual steering and manual brakes. Kind of an odd choice for a young kid, but I always did and still do like big American cars. What can I say? Would love to hear what other Villagers drove and why they liked or disliked their choice.

Default 1956 Ford

Ahhh- my first car was a 1956 green Ford, bought in 1965. 6-cylinder stick shift. I had a choice of buying it for $150 and going to college, or buying a cool '57 Chevy and not going to college. I chose the Ford. Sold it for $125 18 months later, after graduating from junior college, joined the Air Force and finished my college degree while in the service.

Loved my Ford-- got me where I was going, no monthly payment, and it got me in college. Soon, we're TV bound.

First car was a 1962 Buick Skylark that my father bought and resold to me two years later.

Maybe that why I prefer mid-size cars. Now its called a full size car but itsn't any bigger. What do they call the really large size cars today?

My first car was a 1949 black Plymouth Deluxe. It was a 3 on the column manual and sat almost as high as a city bus! I loved (and still do) that car. The oddest thing on it was the venting system. It was a handle located under the radio area that you pushed down. A V-shaped vent located on the hood under the windshield would pop up and you had instant fresh air. To close the vent, you pushed the handle back up. My father bought it for me in 1963 and I drove it for nearly 6 years.

The old cars had some unique features.
The thing I remember most about my Buick, the antenna was in the center of the roof right above the windshield. There was a knob that you used to move the antenna around for reception. Also, the old Sonomatic AM radio which was tube. When you turned it on, it would hum while the tubes warmed up.....and then the music would start. To start the car, you pulled out the choke, turn the key to on, and pressed down on the accelerator pedal.

Pretty cool how you could pick up a used car for a couple hundred bucks back then. Didn't pay much, so you didn't lose much.

Default My first car

was an NSU Prinz that my parents got me to get me to and from university. It was serviced by VW with a rear engine and you couldn't tell whether it was coming or going. It had a 2 cyl. engine and my late husband used to call it my covered lawnmower! But it got me around town and even up north on the 400 going with the flow of traffic and then some. The first car I bought was an Austin 1100 which was great except in a major rain. Could never figure out why a British car would stall in the rain, given that England is known as a rainy country. Needless to say I am partial to small cars and now drive a Toyota Echo though we also have a Kia Rondo, which is big by comparison and has all the space we need to travel down with our stuff to TV. Maybe one day I'll look into a Smart car though it is really too small for grandkids. Cute though.

Default Rambler

I remember being a Senior in High School in 1967 and how proud my parents were when I bought a used Rambler car as they believed it was a very "sensible" car for someone to drive.

It wasn't until years later that I "confessed" to them that the reason I bought it was that the front seats fully reclined and it was a great car for drive in dates.

So much for sensible.

My first car was a '55 Ford Crown Victoria four door two tone white top and orange bottom.

First new car was a red '63 Austin Healy Sprite. It was so low that other cars and trucks couldn't see you next to them on four lane or more roads and were always a danger to run you over.

We didn't have a car while I was in school but when I was stationed in Germany in 1960 I purchased a 1950 Mercedes 4 door with a stick shift on the floor. That car only lasted a little over a year. After that I purchased a 59 Chevrolet from another officer in my division. That car got me thru my tour of duty in Germany in 1963. After that my memory fades about the make of cars I have owned over the years.

Smile First Car

My first car in High School was a 1936 Chrysler shift on the floor and
then I moved up to a 1955 Morris Minor that could be cranked in the winter
if it did not start . With the Morris Minor I could drive from NY to North Carolina for less thans 4.00 in gas.
