Came to just under $8 a (generous) sandwich. We invited some friends- Chicagoans- and ate like starving tigers on a meat truck.... as they say on the South Side ![]() Even had left-overs for the next day. We will definitely do that again, it was an absolute treat! Roseland had GREAT italian beef sandwiches in their day and wonderful Italian grocery stores. Taylor Street did and still does(!) too- best bread bakeries in the entire city, serving local grocers and the finest restaurants. The delicious smells would make your mouth water as soon as you walked into any of those wonderful stores. That's one thing I DO miss - a great Italian grocery store. |

Ok I know I'm going to get crucified for this but I was born and raised in Chicago lived there till I moved here. I grew up with the best hot dogs ever, those sold by the guys pushing the old hot dog carts through the neighborhoods, steamed poppy seed buns all the fiixns but yes I put ketchup on my hot dogs and so do a lot of my Chicago friends LOL to each his own. Buono Beef to me is better than Portillos and the best is at Vesuvios on 22nd street just east of OakBrook, mom and pop Italian Deli huge sandwiches ad very reasnable, made their own sausage too! It was the best by far!

I have been told there is a Chicagoland club in The Villages, but supposedly there is a waiting list to get into the club. I sent the club an e-mail several months ago to find out when their meetings are, but I never got a reply. Maybe I should have taped a $50 bill on to my e-mail -- that's the Chicago way you know? LOL. Maybe someone on TOTV knows when and where the club meets.

I am from the Maryland 'burbs of Washington DC. I have never heard of Italian Beef Sandwiches. Most likely, I guess, the Chicago version of the cheesesteak minus the cheese and dipped in meat juices. Am I right?
After all, each region has it's specialty. How many Chicagoans have had Crab Imperial, enjoyed Baltimore Pit Beef, or had steamed Maryland Blue Crabs with Old Bay and washed it down with a Natty Bo? |

Next to none. It's probably great food like Italian Beef and real pizza.

..... except Chicagoans do not call it a 'sangwich'.
That's an old stereotype, perhaps from early immigrants who came to build the city. |
