We JUST ordered all the Italian beef sandwich fixin's (including green peppers and Marconi's hot Giardiniera) from Portillo's and had it shipped here!!! Even came with their Italian rolls to bake upon delivery.... OMG it was yummy!

Came to just under $8 a (generous) sandwich. We invited some friends- Chicagoans- and ate like starving tigers on a meat truck.... as they say on the South Side
Even had left-overs for the next day. We will definitely do that again, it was an absolute treat!

Roseland had GREAT italian beef sandwiches in their day and wonderful Italian grocery stores. Taylor Street did and still does(!) too- best bread bakeries in the entire city, serving local grocers and the finest restaurants.
The delicious smells would make your mouth water as soon as you walked into any of those wonderful stores.

That's one thing I DO miss - a great Italian grocery store.

Ok I know I'm going to get crucified for this but I was born and raised in Chicago lived there till I moved here. I grew up with the best hot dogs ever, those sold by the guys pushing the old hot dog carts through the neighborhoods, steamed poppy seed buns all the fiixns but yes I put ketchup on my hot dogs and so do a lot of my Chicago friends LOL to each his own. Buono Beef to me is better than Portillos and the best is at Vesuvios on 22nd street just east of OakBrook, mom and pop Italian Deli huge sandwiches ad very reasnable, made their own sausage too! It was the best by far!

I'll check out O'Shea's Sports Pub when we get back in October (doesn't sound very Italian tho).

Back in the day - the best Italian Beef was from a place in Roseland called Pementie's (sp).

I know this is an old post, but I couldn't believe my eyes. You're really from Roseland? Who wouldda thought? I too am from that great neighborhood! It was the very best place to grow up. I'm hoping I find a club for those from Chicago once we move in.

I will be in TV next month. For a small fee I will stop by Vesuvios and smuggle some Italian beef in my carry on bag and deliver it to your house. I don't think the TSA at O'Hare will have a problem with that do you? LOL.

I have been told there is a Chicagoland club in The Villages, but supposedly there is a waiting list to get into the club. I sent the club an e-mail several months ago to find out when their meetings are, but I never got a reply. Maybe I should have taped a $50 bill on to my e-mail -- that's the Chicago way you know? LOL. Maybe someone on TOTV knows when and where the club meets.

I am from the Maryland 'burbs of Washington DC. I have never heard of Italian Beef Sandwiches. Most likely, I guess, the Chicago version of the cheesesteak minus the cheese and dipped in meat juices. Am I right?

After all, each region has it's specialty. How many Chicagoans have had Crab Imperial, enjoyed Baltimore Pit Beef, or had steamed Maryland Blue Crabs with Old Bay and washed it down with a Natty Bo?

From the online menu of Portillos (famous Chicago-area chain which would probably do quite well in The Villages if they ever decided to expand to FL). I like my Italian beef sandwich dipped and with mozzarella cheese, no peppers.

BEEF-N-SAUSAGE SANDWICHES
We make our Italian Beef with extra gravy. If you prefer it another way,
let your order taker know. DRY: Very little gravy... EXTRA GRAVY: We splash
a bit of gravy on the sandwich... DIPPED: We dip the sandwich in the gravy
ITALIAN BEEF Our own famous recipe ...........................4.99
Chicago’s #1 Italian Beef served on perfectly baked French bread.
We recommend adding hot or sweet peppers to your sandwich (additional charge)
BIG BEEF.............................................. ..................6.90
For the larger appetite.
CHAR-GRILLED ITALIAN SAUSAGE.......................4.09
COMBO BEEF & CHAR-GRILLED SAUSAGE..........5.95
BEEF-N-CHEDDAR CROISSANT............................5.25
A perfect combination of our famous Italian Beef layered with Cheddar
cheese and served on a toasted croissant.
HOME COOKED SWEET PEPPERS ...........................45
HOT PEPPERS........................................... ................45
MOZZARELLA or CHEDDAR CHEESE.......................50

..... except Chicagoans do not call it a 'sangwich'.
That's an old stereotype, perhaps from early immigrants who came to build the city.
