Default it's the hoagie roll...

the hoagie has to have the right roll. amoroso's from philadelphia is the best roll; my brother-in-law takes bags of them back to las vegas when he visits the phila area.....that is how good they are.
am sure that you can make your won from decent lunchmeat from publix...but....ya gotta have the right roll!

Is anyone here familiar with the cold-cut sandwich that I used to get as a kid when we lived in Philadelphia known as a Hoagie? I've had many people say "Oh yeah, a cheese-steak". NO!!! Not a cheese-steak! I'm talking about a cold-cut sandwich with several types of meat and cheese and VERY thinly sliced onions and God knows what else and finished with either oil and vinegar or italian dressing. I know some of you old folks know of what I speak. I lived in Philadelphia over 50 years ago, but I can still remember those sandwiches and nothing I have had since can hold a candle. We have gone to Philly a couple of times, but have not been able to find anywhere that made anything like them. I think mostly they were made in mom and pop deli's, but like I said, it's been over 50 years. Mainly, I want to know if there is anywhere in TV that has anything remotely close to this type of concoction. Subway doesn't count.

You're probably right about having the right roll. I was hoping that with so many people from "The North" moving to TV, that someone would have figured a way to import them down South. As I've stated, it's been over 50 year since I had what I remember to be a hoagie. I have no idea of what type of meat was on them and if it is even available any more. You know, with all the FDA restrictions and all. Those meats and cheeses may have been from old family recipes and not allowed to be sold any longer. I sure do miss them though.

You forgot the Prosciutini. A lot of people call it black pepper ham.

I just ate and that makes my mouth water anyway. I have GOT to write those ingredients down and see if I can pig out later after I go to the grocery store. I'll bet our grocery store might not have some of those.

Up here we call them grinders and they use the same ingredients but add mortadella. I also think Publix makes a good sandwich and you can get it with Boars head meat. I get it with oil and put balsamic on it when I get home.

Back in my younger days when I worked at a neighborhood Submarine Sandwich Store all of the above was used and also boiled ham. One very important ingredient that was left off the list was wine vinegar along with the olive oil. And extra please Living on the edge would use red pepper flakes for a little kick.

Mmmmmm.....can't wait to get a sub at Publix when we return to Florida this Fall.

Hubby is a big fan of subs (as we call them in Va)...and every so often I will indulge in one myself.... since he refuses to share...

Sure, we know what a "hoagy" or "grinder" is.....but why expend the syllables when you're hungry for a SUB!

Jeff.....you're right on the money...honey.....a sub isn't a sub....without the bread.....

It's all about the >>>> B R E A D

Phila does have the best hoagies; second to none! Had a few Primo hoagies when we were last there a couple of weeks ago. Phila's got the best sandwiches because they are not connected to org's like Subways, etc. I've had Jersey Mike's subs in TV and they are probably the best you're going to get IMO.

Well I've never been to Philly so I don't doubt their great, but I've got to give a shout out to Federal Hill in Providence, RI
(little Italy). Like Philly, local shops and restaurants who are proud of the product.

Depends where you came from but Hoagies, Grinders, Heros or Subs (not a Philly Cheese Steak) seem to all be similar. Try the subs they make at Publix. Sounds to me like they will put almost everything you mentioned on one of their subs.

I thought the Hokey Pokey was what it's all about.

Apparently, it's the hoagie.

Cane Garden makes an excellent Philly cheese steak sandwich. Go there for one when ever we're down.
