I have to agree with Indydealmaker - quit making excuses for the waiter. He signed on to do a job - suck up and do it or get a different job. If not tipping him hurts his co-workers, tuff! They should take it out on him or hold an attitude readjustment session with him.

I seldom don't tip at all (did once - will tell you about that later) but I sometimes leave a very small tip (hope they don't do away with pennies or I will have to up my "small" tip to a nickle) when I am really not happy with the service. Leave nothing - they may think you forgot; leave a pittance and they know you didn't forget but you were really really po'd.

People forget the meaning of TIPS - "To Insure Prompt Service". They are earned. They are not a right.

I promised to tell you about the one time I left NO TIP - I had asked my server for a coffee refill several times. My second cup of coffee never came. Unhappy camper that I was, I left no tip. On the way out, the server (a young lady if it matters to anyone) was crass enough to mention that I had not left a tip (I may date myself here but this was before it was common to put the tip on the credit card bill). I said "Yes I did - it's under the second cup of coffee!" and kept on walking out. I think she got the message!

It is under "allocated tips". The IRS number is 8% but, neice worked as a waitress in NJ and they reported 10%. The tax is not withheld each week, but is reported as income and it "all comes out in the wash" at the end of the year.

I don't get it...How did a comment on poor service turn into a bashing of Obama and "progressives"...That seems to be the mantra of some...The fact is, if you suffered poor service (subjective),then don't tip the full amount, inform management, and don't return.. some of their staff would probably be happy,those with bad legs at least..

I have a gripe about taverna Red in the fact that they virtually shut down the restaurant at least once a week for " Trivia games" ..I love their food but won't stay for the games and the noise during dinner because of that..IMHO they ought to stick to the basics, good food, at a reasonable price, and good service..

I won't return to a restaurant if I find something like a hair in my food, if my meat is consistently overcooked (sent back and second go-round is still overdone), if I truly think the restaurant is unsanitary. But I won't condemn a restaurant because a server had a bad day. A server is human and if they treat a customer badly, they lose in tips. No reason to punish the restaurant unless it is a consistent problem, not the first time.

As to this incident, I can perfectly understand why Trevor left without worrying about this table. If even an iota of the attitude that came across in OP's first post was shown at the table, Trevor knew his tip (1) would be on the card and (2) would be minimal, at best. Something tells me the group had already stayed beyond the time needed to eat, finish beverages and chat a little since they were watching the game. He did say he had a concert to go to, so he probably left as soon as his manager said he could go. Yes, he should have gone to the table and told them he was leaving now and that someone was taking over the table but, again, I think Trevor was as put out as the customers were.

Sorry, servers are human. They're a bit more than automatons that serve your food, fill your glasses, clean your table. Most customers appreciate a server who talks a little, smiles, shows some personality -- they're the ones who get the biggest tips. Asking for the tip in cash may not have been the best thing to do but it wasn't the most unforgivable thing I've heard a server do.

We always leave cash for a tip when paying with a credit card. If you write the amount of your tip on the ticket then the server does not get it all. According to a TV segment on tipping, the establishment gets about 2% of the written tip. Many people do not know this fact.

1) It is not common practice for management to keep any portion of a gratuity, charge of cash. Ocassionally charge tips are added to the servers paycheck, depending how an operator chooses to reconcile.

2) In the state of Florida, servers are required to report, and pay taxes on 8% of their total sales and are required to report ALL credit card tips(paper trail)

3) 18% is the appropriate minimum service charge/gratuity, 25% is the going rate for good service.

4) Tipping less than 18% will ensure you never get the maximum level of attention you deserve at that establishment... Servers never forget a poor tip, they talk among themselves, and are quick to point poor tippers out to their comrads.

5) Restaurant managers/operators have very little compassion or sympathy for poor tippers, don't look for resolve there, especially if you have just stiffed one of his/her staff members.

Some of us were born with the ability to become doctors, nurses, engineers and some of us were born with the ability to work hard and do less complicated and sometimes more physically tiring jobs.

Justifiable pride and satisfaction and money to take care of ourselves comes from working for a living no matter what the job.

I wasn't there and I can't know how frustrating the situation was, but I have NEVER ever not tipped. Servers do not get paid much.

We all handle things as we see fit.

I was just sharing my unsatisfactory experiencine at tavern RED. My character has been attacked, we are considered evil people, shame on us!
As photojournalist I took shots of things of events that were not the most enjoyable to shoot. But it was my job. I was rewarded with my paycheck, if I didn't do my job I was not paid.
This waiter did not do his job, we were very understanding of his need for cash, notice I said understanding Not sympathetic, if he would have done his job he would have received a cash tip. However if I didn't take the shots I was assigned I would not have gotten paid. The same outcome was for this 40 year old man.
No one put a gun to this persons head to do this job, maybe it is all he can do in life, (as Gracie said , this is God's plan for a person). I do not look down on this person or do I look up to him. I just look at him an say...JUST DO YOUR JOB! If your looking for a handout....do not come to me....I donate to my church and established charities !
