Default Smoking at the Old Mill Playhouse.

I went to the 1:10 P.M. showing of The Amazing Spider-Man II yesterday at the Old Mill Playhouse. I got there just before the movie started about 1:00 and sat at the very top. I have kind of an old gunfighter thing about wanted my back at the wall. Anyway, as the movie progressed, I thought it was very weird that this-or-that scene had smoke in it. The movie, after all was in 3-D. But, then I figured that it must be that man scooting down a few seats just ahead of me and smoking. I took a big wiff to see if this person was also smoking Mary Jane. After all, this was Spider-Man, but with no Mary Jane in scent or sight. That was the old Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson.

Anyway, throughout the movie, I would see the smoke rising every 20 minutes or so and this was about a 2.5 hour movie.

I thought about going to the manager with a complaint about someone smoking. There were maybe 10 people in total at this showing of Spider-Man and all of these but me were in front of the smoker and quite a distance way.

The man smoking was Oriental in appearance with a large purse as well. I was not sure it even was a man until I saw him waiting in the men's room as I went out of the Old Mill Playhouse. The very large purse kind of gave me pause about determining this person's gender. His appearance was also quite well kept and a bit effeminate. Short hair but some women have haircuts like this person had.

I am not very confrontational most of the time and thought again maybe I should have complained. What happens with these kinds of things here in the Villages? Would the cops come and take statements because someone was violating the laws against smoking in movie theaters?

The movie was OK. If you do see it, there is an ad for an X-Men movie just a little bit in the Credits.

No extra scene after the Credits however which was a bit of a let down.

The manager could have answered your question or are you just looking for opinions?

I did not think this person's smoking was that bothersome at that time so I did not complain. I would like to get an idea of what would happen if I had taken this to the manager? I cannot remember any time in my movie going experiences that I have ever seen someone smoking. It happened a lot at concerts and this was usually smoking Mary Jane. I got a little high for instance from second hand smoke at the Red Rocks Bette Midler concert. Complaining to the manager at Red Rocks though would have been quite foolish as half the spectators seemed to be smoking something.

My reason for posting this was that it might help someone who finds themselve with this person smoking in a Villages' movie theater who reads TOTV and would like to do something about this smoker.

I like to pick my battles and this did not seem one worth starting with the smoker. And the Old Mill Playhouse staff who clean up the theaters after the people have left MAY or MAY NOT have found evidence of someone smoking like cigarette butts.

If the Villages' movie theater staff read TOTV maybe they can look out for this Oriental man carrying a large purse if he does smoke at Villages' movie theaters.

Not saying you should have "reported" the smoker, just ask management the policy. I am sure some of the "19th hole" lawyers will give you and opinion...........allthough it may be the wrong one.

I would have approached the smoker and reminded him/her of the rules. If the smoking continued, I would have reported it to the manager.

If you ask the management what is your policy on smoking you are kind of opening them up to asking "Why are you asking us that question"? Then I would have had to look around and see if I saw the person who had been smoking. As I was leaving the Old Mill Playhouse, I had seen the man waiting to get into the toilet stalls in the men's room near the concession stand and Auditorium I which was playing The Other Woman yesterday.

Smoking in public buildings is prohibited in Florida. Are there no smoking signs around? Honestly, I never looked to see if any are around. One can say the movie theater is a privately owned building so the law may not apply but not sure that excuse would work.

Maybe. From the people I see smoking at Doggie Doo Run Run, on occasion, the smoke has an appearance which is distinctive to regular cigarettes. From the E-cigarettes on YouTube I have seen smoked, there is quite a larger amount of smoke (vapor) created.

The man seated in front of me also seemed to be quite concerned about who was around him. He took a risk lighting up in other words.

I do not believe a movie theater would be considered a private venue not protected by the FL Health and Safety Laws. I have never see anyone smoking in any other theater while I lived in Florida. That's since 1996 or so. I rarely go to movies other than in the afternoon so I am not aware of what audiences in the evening and midnight showings would be like. I do not remember any no smoking signs at the Villages' movie theaters but cannot say I ever really searched for them.

I would have gone to the manager immediately. Smoking in the building is not permitted. It would have been a nuisance to the other patrons. It's a fire hazard.

It isn't always easy doing what you feel is right and you don't want to be a bother. I truly understand your feelings. I'm not one to complain, unless there's a rule or law being broken. If something is different than my opinion, it's that persons right to have that opinion. It's simply an opinion. Smoking is a public building is more than a persons right to express themselves.

I've read your posting more than once. You're obviously a good person thinking about the feelings of others. You allowed this person to interfere with the enjoyment of a movie. That isn't fair to you.

Are e-cigs allowed in a theater? I would doubt it but do not know for certain.

Is the term " Oriental" correct to use in 2014?

Are laws regarding smoking include e-cigarettes? Common sense seems that they do include e-cigarettes.

OP, regarding the incident you reported, The prudent response would be to report it to the management of Old Mill Playhouse.

For now e-cigs are pretty much allowed everywhere. Its up to the establishment to determine if they are not allowed by posting a no e-cig sign. They use to be allowed at airports but last time I was there they had up signs no vapor. Its just a matter of time and they will have the same fate as smoking, banned everywhere. Regulation have already begun in a few states.

I should have said Asian, I guess. I used this term mainly because I never got a very good look at the man. He left when the theater was still dark and I only had a fleeting look at him from a distance as I passed the men's room where he was waiting to go to a toilet stall. I had not seen him while I was climbing the stairs and only noticed him after the movie started when he looked back at me. Probably just before lighting up.
