Unhappy Roofs

Consider The Warranty Dept. of The Village's knew there were defective roofs in The Villages and elected to not advise the home owners. Consider that Owen's Corning who were the manufacturers of the defective roof shingles knew of the problem and delayed letting the residents know. Consider you were one of the owners of a home with these shingles and because you were not told by the Warranty Dept or Owen's Corning the warranties ran out thereby forcing you into losing your rightful guarantee of some of the costs to replace the shingles. Yep,
it happened here. That is a shameful.

Can you elaborate more? When was your home built, what section.?

The roofs are done with owens corning shingles. I do not remember the start date but up to Oct,2009. We called warranty and thank goodness we have different roofing shingles. I think they should have to be responsible for damage inside your house if they are covering cost of shingles S,Dimonga because it is related. At least look into it. Good luck.

Thumbs down SDiMonda

It was built in 2006 and had we been advised by The Warranty Dept that there was a problem with the building (e.g. defective shingles) which they had always been aware of we would not have any problem with the Warranty. Both Owen's and The Warranty Dept. elected to delay and/or waited for the home owner to find out which was, as I said "shameful" on both parts. As I understand it they (Warranty Dept) was allegedly asked to alert all owners who had Oakridge Shingles to let them know so they could take action BUT they refused and so they would wait for the Home Owner to find out. After all the Warranty Dept. was resonsible for The Villages homes ! The home owners would have to fight for justice against those with almost unlimited funds and probably Attorney(s) on retainer. It's a classic case of the "little guy" being abused by Corporations and less than fair representation from the ones they were relying on. At this point it is not really the costs but the principle. We paid for our labor and will go on with life but again have lost some more respect for The Warranty portion of The Villages, the Management who was aware of what was going on and of course the fairness of some Corp's.

This is strange as everyone I am aware of in my neighborhood that got a new roof did not pay a cent and OC paid their labor. I would file a claim against OC and it seems they would pay. At one time they were trying to get by without paying labor and then they reversed that.

Don't give up.

Question Question

Graciegirl: I am confused regarding your message. When taping on the search line it comes up with nothing available?

Thumbs down Thanks

Villager Dude: Thanks for the support and interest. I did go back to OC a couple of times and they refused to even hear the circumstances. It was clearly a case of dealing with a Corp. Bully who essentially said "sue me" while they have attorney(s) on retainer and unlimited funds. As sad as it is the bullies (The Village Warranty Dept and OC) have no conscience and put profit ahead of what is honest. Fortunately the amount involved is significant but will not impact our quality of life. There is a theory that "what goes around will come around" and I feel pretty confident that either as a group or individually the participants will
have to deal with the consequences of their acts.

I don't understand. Everyone that I know personally that had defective roofs had them replaced in the couple of years after this happened. Your house is eight years old? Some friends were given new shingles and had their roofs replaced with their paying the labor too several years later like in the last few months..

But you can't possibly know everyone that had the problems. Don't know how close the developer is to the warranty dept that he knows what is going on.

Thumbs down Good Question

Graciegirl: I understand, we have another person who has the same type of home as we do, OC shingles identified as defective, OC will provide shingles but not labor. I guess they found they could abuse some owners and get away with
it? What a terrible Company. I honestly believe The Villages Warranty Dept is just as bad by "hiding" the defect from the Owner's until it was too late to do anything. Why would The Warranty Dept tell you NOT TO CALL OC knowing you had one of their bad roofs. It only makes sense if it was an attempt to keep the problem low key in order not to impact the reputation of the quality of the homes in The Villages and/or to protect some relationship with OC? The major Corporation which I worked for had a policy that it was just as important to protect against even the image of wrong doing as wrong doing. This fails both tests.

PennBF.... I thought the recall/issue for roofs affected houses built from 2007 to 2009. You say yours was built in 2006. This is for the problem with granules coming loose prematurely.

There was an earlier, smaller OC roof issue for houses built in 04-05. It was either a warping or glue problem, as I recall.

I've been watching this issue since my house was built in March 06 but so far haven't seen or heard of any problems in my neighborhood. I called warranty a while back and they said I would be contacted by OC if there was a problem.

How and when did you know you had a roof problem?

We are not full time yet. We purchased our home in 2007. The only reason we had our roof checked was our neighbors told us we should. Our roof was replaced at no cost to us last January.

PennBF - did you register you complaint within the timeline that was posted - I believe it was 5 years from your build date. My preowned was built in 08 and the roof came into question during my home inspection in 12. Roof replaced at no cost by OC.
