Has anyone installed an EV level 2 charging station in their garage? If so what Contractor did you use?

I haven't yet but soon will. All I need is to have a NEMA 14-50 socket installed and appropriate cable and breaker in the panel. My charger just plugs Into a NEMA 14-50 socket, same as what a stove or dryer would use. I can mount the charger on the wall myself.

I'm expecting it to be a bit on the expensive side because I want the full 50 amps to the plug.

I will have Pike's electric do the install. They have done a great job on other projects for me.

Some time ago there were ads for generator plug in sockets and also for mobile home with similar specs, as i recall all were is the $250 to $300 with the requirement the new equipment was very close to the circuit breaker panel.

Do you have enough service to add a 50 amp breaker or do you have to get a new breaker box?

There is room in the panel for the double breaker and I have a 200 amp service so it shouldn't be a problem unless there is some code thing that prevents it.

The panel an outlet are both in the garage so it should be ok to use conduit along the block wall. That will cut down on the cost of the cable and time.

I'll find out more after I talk to Pike's.

Perhaps of interest. Business news, Tessler has signed a deal with Hertz auto rental for a large number or Tessler autos. I do not know the details. but it was mentioned they would build charging stations.

I have conduit on the outside for regular 120v sockets on the columns of my lanai. Pikes did the installation about six years ago. But that was done on the outside for cosmetic reasons.

I haven't seen conduit inside in FL, but when lived in MA I had conduit for sockets in the basement for a workshop and washer dryer.

I know that there are some cases where you can't use metal conduit but those are in high current industrial applications where the conduit can prevent the breaker from tripping before the contacts weld themselves together.

So my guess is it will be OK to run conduit inside but I won't know for sure until Pike's comes and takes a look.

I used Lennart in two different houses to install the outlet. Both times it was under 250

I would appreciate hearing from you regarding what Pike says. I had read that 75 Amps is required but can't remember where I read that. We have a double for a dryer but we have a gas dryer so it could be removed, not sure what code is regarding the box itself.

Pike's is coming Nov 8 to do the estimate, I'll get back then with the results.

50 amps is the requirement for the charger I'm getting and it will charge at about 10KW per hour. That's enough to fully charge even a flat battery overnight.

On the road some high-speed can chargers run at 250KW per hour and others at about 150KW per hour which gets an 80% charge in about 20 minutes. The charge rate drops off the battery charges up otherwise it would be even less time.

As far as I can tell it is easy to find high-speed chargers on the road... but finding high speed chargers that are working at all or working at the spec'd rate is a problem. You can see some of the issues you can run into in this video of a Florida to NY road trip.

I don't have my car yet but my guess is road trips will be inconvenient and take longer that a gas car but it will not be a show stopper. I expect networks and chargers to get better and more reliable over time.
