A post in this forum about charity phone calls gave me the idea for this thread. What charities are at the top of your list. Which ones do you support, and "if you wish to tell," why?
We are supporters of the MS society and regularly make financial and material contributions to families in need. |

My very first priorities are:
1) my boarding school, in western Connecticut 2) my college, in Maine 3) my old home-town favorite Saint Louis Zoo 4) the Nature Conservancy 5) the American Lung Association Number One gets twice as much as Number Two. Both together get a h*** of a lot more than Numbers 3, 4 and 5 combined! And, I'm considering a fairly sizable contribution to the equipment needs of our very own Moffitt Cancer Center, in memory of my late wife! SWR ![]()

My prayers and my contributions go mainly to two organizations that care for our armed forces personnel that give so much in the service of our country.
In the past I concentrated on Oliver North's Freedom Alliance because virtually all monies go to the charity to give scholarship money to the children of fallen warriors with all operating expenses either paid by North or donated. I now have been getting active in the Hope For Warriors Fund which recently was the recipient of the quest to break the Guinness Record for the longest golf cart parade here in The Villages. We failed in breaking the record, but not in raising money for, and the morale of, our wounded warriors.

Heart of a Marine Foundation.
Started by Roy and Georgette Franks in memory of their son Phil, killed in Iraq. They help all veterans. Their biggest item is distributing laptops and software to VA Centers to help Vets recover their motor skills from head trauma caused by IED's. |

During the good day in business I gave to many charities. As my business downsized I needed to cut back on expenses. And now that my wife and I are retired, and our salaries 1/3 of what they once were we need to be selfish and cut back on the amount of charities and the size donation.
I do give to cancer (for obvious reasons) Save a pet) An organization who does not destroy animals and offer food and supplies for the needy. LOVE 136 (Finds homes and care for victims of Human Trafficking.)

Although I am not Catholic, I recommend Catholic Relief Services. My daughter worked for them for a number of years both in Baltimore and Ghana. I met many of their people. They are a great group very dedicated to the service they give.

My charity of choice is HALO/Helping and Loving Orphans because I know for sure that the funds go directly to the orphans. The founder/director, Betty Tisdale, has been supporting orphanages around the world since 1960 - yes, this is her 50th year! Mrs. Tisdale has never accepted wages/salary of any kind (uses donated flyer miles to travel to orphanages). No paid staff - HALO's is wholly staffed by volunteers. I am currently one of those volunteers. There is a TV movie on Mrs. Tisdale. www.bettytisdale.com

Mainly to the Salvation Army-(Year round), as the needs they respond to, are not seasonal and I am of the opinion that most of what I give reaches many in need in our own area.
