Default Garage Door Insulation

I've read where some people DIY and insulate their garage door(s). Is there an insulation kit you can purchase? If so, where? If no kit, how did you do it? Thank you.

Solar Guys did ours, more money, but the adhesive they used was overpowering. 2/cart with taller door $425. Worth every penny to not climb a ladder and only breathe the fumes for the few minutes while in the garage. Dropping temp about 15 degrees, with direct sun on very dark doors for 10 hours.

Will still put in a split next year, but helps for now

I believe both Lowe's and Home Depot sell kits, and I also believe there are suitable glue that have a very low odor, in any case if this is a DIY project make sure the glue you choose is compatible with the insulation, some glues will destroy or melt the insulation.

We did not do it DIY. So I cannot help on your question. In the event your consider contractor-installed insulation, we used Munn’s. They installed rigid foam - no cement.

Purchased kit from Lowe's. Foil backed fiberglass, no glue required. DIY took about 2 hours. Both sound and heat was reduced. Six years now, still intact.

Very easy and inexpensive DIY project that I enjoyed last winter. I used a NASA Tech kit that I purchased from amazon. It comes with double sided tape but I found it too time consuming to work with because I mounted mine directly on the back side of each individual panel. For that i used power grab adhesive in a tube applied with a caulking gun. My doors have windows that had to be cut out so I mounted 4 small command hooks around each window and use the cutouts to cover the windows on hot sunny days and they can be easily removed on cooler/cloudy days. My doors face west and it makes a noticeable difference in garage temperature. Overall It cost me less than $200 for materials.

Unless you A/C your garage, my opinion is you are better off installing a screen garage door to be used in conjunction with the hard door. We use our hard door in the winter when it's cold or during hurricanes, but otherwise we use our screen garage door and are very happy with it. Garage is ventilated, full of daylight, and is the same temp as ambient outdoors. We have insulated the attic over our garage FYI, and we put reflective film on the window that faces south. We used Thumper's Screen Garage Doors some 6 years ago and are very very happy with their door and service. It is the type of door that retracts overhead just like the hard door does.

Romac did our door with Styrofoam. Much better than the thin insulation from solar guys. I believe you can order the kit & do it yourself.

With the foam panels you do not need to use any glue. The edges of the garage door will hold the panels in place. Get a hot knife for cutting the panels.

2 + 1/2 garage doors diy. I bought a pre cut kit for the large door from Romac. I would have picked up a kit for the golf cart door too, but they didn’t have one in stock. I bought another kit from Lowe’s for the smaller door. I used a battery powered drill to remove the hurricane bracing one at a time to install the insulation panels then reassembled the hurricane brace after each row of panels. This is the time consuming part of the job, but very DIY friendly. The Romac kit is very nice and the end result is professional quality. The kit from Lowe’s is OK, with a slightly different finish but does an equally nice job, but requires you to hand cut some panels.

I started last year by installing powered screens on both doors which work well during the “cooler” months. I also installed a powerful fan in the garage ceiling, but it’s so loud I rarely use it.

Ended up having a mini split A/C system installed which I highly recommend.

Also hired Romac to insulate the Garage attic.

No glue necessary. The panels are very stiff and remain in place.
