Default Northern Arapaho given permit to kill bald eagles

Is there something wrong about this, or is it just me?

Europeans killed off all the eagles to near extinction, not Native Americans.
Native Americans should be able to do anything they want without our 'permission' as they were the original 'green' citizens and will respect nature.
Something the rest of us collectively have not done and there's plenty of proof out there. I can cite litterbugs for starters.

Native Americans are no average 'minority group'. I say, yes the government should leave them alone! It's their religious freedom that Europeans/U.S. Govt. systematically tried to destroy and for the most part were successful. It's way past time for them to have it restored.

Default Agree with Captain John. It is permission for two bald eagles.

I agree with Captain John with some reservations (sorry!).

The tribe only got permission to kill two bald eagles.

This is part of their religion and does not seem to cause any other harm. It actually sends a message of respect for that Native American tribe's culture.

Native Americans revere the bald eagle and use their feathers in rituals; this has been a sacred part of their medicinal pratices for hundreds of years. They will be allowed to take two eagles. There are a great many eagles in the wild now and they are threatened by the loss of their habitat not by Native Americans. Many bald eagles die from lead poisening because they now eat carrion killed by toxic ammunition. It's a serious problem for eagles; over 25% of eagles who are found to be sick or injured are found to have toxic levels of lead. There is a movement for hunters to use non toxic ammunition. Also, it's not unusual to find eagles who were killed by hunters in
the wild; in my mind the lead poisening and senseless killings are more serious problems for the eagles.

Two eagles,....OK,......but I wouldn't be too ungrateful to our European ancestors. You are enjoying the fruits of their so called "progress and greed". If they hadn't conquered the existing inhabitants of this land we certainly wouldn't be here enjoying the fruits of it today,....and we certainly wouldn't be living in The Villages enjoying our lifestyle. I know it's a popular to criticize our ancestors and somehow think that we would have been more upright, or different, or done things differently,....I wonder?

Laws have been enacted to protect and reverse harm and abuse that was done early on in this country. The eagles have come back. Maybe you'd rather just move back to Europe? You may not like it but we unfortunately live in a world that is governed by the aggressive use of force. It was true when Europeans moved to this land and it's still true today. I'm not saying it's right but it's the way it is. If they hadn't driven the Indians out we certainly wouldn't be driving our golf carts around here today enjoying The Villages lifestyle.

Thanks to all on expressing their points of view. It's interesting to see how different people feel about this. However, I do have to ask why if the Native Americans want respect for their customs and way of life can't they in return show a little respect for endangered wild life that was here centuries before man first crossed the Bearing Straight to inhabited North America for the first time. Is it too much to expect for them to do a live capture and relocate the bald eagles while they are still on the endangered list?

Skyguy, one thing to remember is that bald eagles are no longer endangered. They are still threatened but not endangered. I think eagles are magnificent birds, but, then, I love all raptors.

The idea of killing such a beautiful bird is heartbreaking to me. At the same time, I've seen the rituals Native American tribes use when killing a sacred animal. It is not a lighthearted killing. It is done with love and reverence and thanks. So, while on a personal level I don't like it, I do understand allowing the killing and, so long as it is limited to two, I can live with it without protest.

I agree that the Native Americans should be able to do what they want as this was their land and we took it away from them. That said if you travel this vast country you will undoubtedly see the Native Americans taking it back as observed by the many casinos they now own. The bottom line is they are getting the last laugh on the people who took their land away from them and they are making a fortune doing it. I know I for one have left many EAGLES on the tables of their gaming houses.

I agree. One must walk a mile in their moccasins before judging.

I wonder what the Bald Eagles think about that ruling. Killing anything to decorate your head seems stupid to me. Maybe that's why they lost their land.
