Default House Insurance for Snow Birds

Building in Sanibel and getting info on house insurance. Was told that due to long stretches of house being unused that I would have the Vancancy Endorsement option on house insurance policy. Meaning that house covered for all except vandalism/mischievous damage after 90 days of vancancy. Also told that all insurances that way? Has anyone come across this or know anything about it? This was through the The Villages Insurance.

Default homwowners insurance

When you compare homeowners policy. Make sure you check the hurricane and sink hole deductables. My premium was about $75 less than my neighbors premiums. However, I found out that I have a lot more out of pocket if I have a claim for one of these events.

Check with Elaine Fisette at Allstate in Buffalo Ridge. 743-4340. They sell homeowners there from several companies. She will give you quotes and you can ask her about the vacancy permit.

I don't think that you got the correct information from the broker. I live in Canada and am away for 6 months. I am a retired insurance broker so I wanted to make sure that we had the correct coverage. They were well aware of my circumstances and sold me a full homeowners with no exclusions. Normally, at least in Canada, a vacancy permit is only put on a policy if the house is actually vacant, with no intent to return. Most or all of the furniture would be gone, you would have moved away and perhaps the house would be for sale. If there is an intent to return, like you obviously plan to do, the house is considered unoccupied not vacant and a permit should not be necessary. That is how I see things as I sit here 100 ft from the Bay of Fundy waiting for the lobster boat to come in so I can have my supper.

bobdel, if you're going to have a home watch person look in on your house weekly, for example, speak with a prospective insurance provider about it. We did when we got our HO insurance and it did address the vacancy concern.

Probably best to not BS your way through the home watch person dealie-o with the insurance provider - ours wanted a name and contact info for our home watch person for potential follow-up/verification.

We had the same situation about the home watch person we hired. (Love ya, Dee!) The insurance company wanted a copy of the contract. We didn't have a contract with Dee, but they were happy with a copy of the emails we exchanged with her.
