I had a toothache. Needed a crown. Three shots of Novocain because the drilling seemed to hit the nerve. I was scared. My tongue seemed to be a problem. Wagging while he drilled. He DRILLED into the underside of my tongue. It still hurts from 4 days ago!!! He claimed my tongue would NOT keep still. Ok...so, I need to ask people out in TOTV land...was this MY fault? Can a patient keep that tongue from moving about or is it the dentist and his assistant that are supposed to keep that tongue from wandering and wagging??

Make an appointment with Serenity Dentistry Spa. it will be the best thing that you have ever done for yourself. Dr Luong is GREAT and all her staff is caring. Prices will not put in the poor house and Dr Luong is a Navy Vet. Had some work done there and have been called several times to make sure that everything is OK. What a great office.

They are located in Spanish Springs on Del Mar.

Wow! I've never heard that one before. If it happened to me I'd feel this way about it. I would feel it was neither the Dr's or my fault. The sudden involuntary movement of the tongue is much faster than a human can normally react to. As such there was a better chance than not that it was strictly an unavoidable accident. I'd also have to say similarly about the assistant. They also have their routine duties as an assistant that could have taken their attention away at the moment the contact occurred, and that could have played into what unfortunately happened.

Having said that, I also have to mention that this didn't actually happen to me, and as such my opinion is no more that food for thought. If it did happen to me, who knows... I could very well be singing another tune, even if I'm not a canary. BTW, I never before heard of a canary going to a dentist before either!

Just take into consideration that the tongue is a very strong muscle and much like SkyGuy79 states it does have sudden involuntary movement that is hard to control under certain circumstances, such as being numb or having a gag reflex as you possibly were being worked on at the time, it is unfortunate that it happened to you I'm sure it feels terrible do some saltwater rinses a couple times a day to help heal it. And just one other thought the assistant is not always holding the tongue it depends which side the doctor is working on, the assistant maybe holding the cheek. I hope you have a better experience next time.

Thank you again for your comments. They've helped me a lot. They did suggest salt water rinses. Went back to the Dr. and he stated that the pain is not coming from the tongue because it is a separate nerve than the tooth. It'll all work out. It helped talking about it. Dentistry is just not a pleasant experience in general.

Where was the dental assistant. She should have been using a mirror to keep your tongue out of the way.

Sorry that happened to you and it could have been avoided if the assistant had pressed on your tongue with a flat instrument. My husband and I became patients of Dr. Luong (after reading many posts on TOTV and we love the practice! Never thought I'd say that about a dentist. Give them a try and I think you'll be happier.

After having another dentsit spill etching acid in my mouth and I had to grab the water thingy to get anything I switched to Serenity. I love it there.
