NYC crime statistics show there is much less crime now than in the 1990’s. Would you have visited in the 1990’s? That answers your question.

Stop listening to political hype and look at facts put out by each state. Overall, crime has been declining, not increasing the past 40 years.

What you “feel” is not hard facts. Look at statistics on actual crime.

Grew up on LI visited, even worked in NYC. Nothing compares to the cultural experiences all in one place. Yet have found many sweet spots here in Florida that have tiny reminders of those experiences. St Augustine for history, Winter Park is like an eclectic reminder of Soho, NYC Village and some interesting eats and shops. Sarasota has a very pleasent cultural mix. Tampa is becoming as cowered as NYC. Is any place truly safe anymore? I think not. Just walk tall and be alert. I wouldn't go alone and would definitely map out where,what I want to experience. Christmas hoilday season is the only time of year I miss the city.

It’s the same as any large city. Theres crime everywhere but if you want to hibernate that’s your choice.

No Way--Plenty of other places to visit where you would not worry about your saftey. Seniors and woman are targets.

Leesburg is much more dangerous than NYC.

Well said! And in New York, as well as all the cities you mention, most of the violent crime is done by criminals from some minority groups against other young criminals from the same group. If you don’t fit those categories, you are really pretty safe in New York and unlikely to see any crimes. Definitely do NOT take your concealed weapon to NYC! That said, there are various scam artists in New York looking for people to scam. If you have lived in New York, you are street smart and know how to behave to avoid trouble. Lots of tourists from the sticks are NOT street smart and do stupid things that give thieves an opportunity. That said, chances are you won’t meet those people. Be awake. Pay attention. Don’t accept things from people like CDs because they will expect you to pay them. Don’t get into conversations with people. Really, while I feel safe walking most streets in Manhattan, if you are worried, maybe don’t go. New York is an amazing place. I once counted fourteen different languages being spoken in one block. It is much safer than it was forty years ago. Really, though, it’s expensive, and the sidewalks are packed with people, most better dressed than you and talking on cell phones. The streets are even more crowded. The subways are crowded and confusing if you haven’t used them before. The taxis are expensive, and there’s a good chance your driver won’t speak English and will take you the long way to where you want to go.

If you are a tourist bent on sightseeing, I’d say go to Washington, DC. The places where the tourists go are safe, it’s much less crowded, there are wonderful museums and public buildings close together, the Metro is safe and easy to use. It’s a much more relaxed place to visit.

Going in May. Historically, always super vigilant in NYC, this trip will be no different. It’s never been Disney World nor Mayberry but it’s a great city to visit. I’m usually in Greenwich Village or Little Italy anyway so I would be disappointed if I didn’t see a little underbelly of society on my way there. Don’t be scared off....just be aware

Good luck! if you go down to GV or Little Italy be sure to take a cab as the subways are not good (they just announced they are installing metal detectors at all subway entrances as there has been so much crime).

Agree with the whole post....except the Grand Canyon missive. Unlike NYC, they usually (if it was a female) don’t get randomly punched in the face before ‘falling in’ to the canyon below

Figures lie and kiars figure. With no bad guys actually staying in jail, I wouldn’t try it, especially the once beautiful Manhattan! That said, it’s true that virtually ALL big cities are corrupt and, therefore, dangerous.
