Wow, I didn’t know they had scan cards back in 1953.

Spruce Creek lights on their gate. At least put a string of flags.
Fully agree - not enough light on the gates themselves and the card reader on the resident side is way too close to the gate as your car is almost touching the gate when you get to the reader.

Don't see any anger, just the usual arguments. I again vote with keeping the gates.

Probably mechanical failure is the main culprit.

Why not put flashing solar powered LEDs on the cross bars to increase visibility. This is used in many locations that have traffic control gates. Also put on the "no carts beyond" signs. Low initial cost and low maintenance.

The gates will still be hit and leds will break when hit by a car increasing and complicating putting the metal pole back on. Most places don't have the number of gates that TV has and the gates are getting hit mostly during the day. The problem is the driver's eyesight and they shouldn't be driving.

Good god no on speed bumps!! Its obvious those that suggest such an idea haven't thought that solution out… they waste money, damage vehicles, carts, are dangerous to bike riders, and most importantly slow down emergency vehicles when responding to an emergency. If the offenders who smack gate bars cant figure those out, think about them driving full speed over a speed bump.

A high jump bar is loosely set on a pin, and comes off without damaging the bar. That is not how the gate bars are attached. They are a heavy metal tube attached to a metal sleeved operator with two through bolts and nuts. When they break away, the end of the bar is dented and the bolts are damaged and pulled out of the sleeve. Not exactly a breakaway connection.

Poor eyesight and impatience.

Here is a link to one type of flexible gate arm.

Virtually Unbreakable Parking Gate Arm Replacements
They used to have flexible gates, that would just bend and then flop back in place. The state made them change to the ones they use now.

It’s a profit center. They charge for every hit as if they replace the arm when in most cases they reuse them until they’re too short. It doesn’t cost $200 to reinstall the arm.

If you don’t have your swipe card, you shouldn’t get in without showing ID or just get rid of the gates. Personally, my parents own a home there and I felt safe knowing gates existed. I like the concept, but not if your just going to open them for anyone.
I think they keep the gates as a selling point for new buyers “Look we protect you”…if new, perspective buyers only knew the stupidity of how those gates are managed 🙄
The gates cause (most) drivers to stop and swipe. on many multimodal crossings you can see the gate down but not the car, like the one on Hillsborough and Buena Vista. A speed bump might cause (most) drivers to slow down but not solve the visibility issue.

How about the internal damage that hitting a gate causes? I would imagine that is part of the problem.

Also, could you please tell us what it does cost seeing how you are a gate expert? TIA.
