I don't understand the criticism of the paper in this instance. It is obvious from prior experience that they put the paper to bed much earlier than metropolitan papers. The night the car crashed into our lanai, the newspaper was on our driveway at 3:00 AM. In order for them to print it, distribute it to the carriers, and them get it to my house, they would have to wrap up the edition much earlier. To me, I give them credit for getting even a small blurb about the tornado disaster onto the front page. At the very least, it gives me incentive to go online or on TV to get more details.

The Sun is not a typical daily paper. It certainly focuses on local news and events and gives somewhat short shrift to national/international news. To expect more will leave one disappointed. With the growth of this community, there may be an opportunity for another paper, but that isn't the way news delivery is evolving.

Isn't it reasonable, for members to voice their displeasure of their own subjects?

Gosh knows, it is done on a plethora of other issues/subjects...by those who defend the paper.

I guess because most of the time it is really silly. Like not covering the tornado in great detail, full page photo spread and two pages of stories.
Or that accident over there or anywhere that happened at eleven PM and it was not reported in the morning paper, because the developer said so.............and lo and behold it shows up in the next issue. However, the whiners never return to point that out.
Come on, get real.

What vitriol? Is disagreeing with the criticism of the paper any more vitriolic than criticism of the paper itself?

What some might forget is that they can subscribe to many newspapers online. No one is stopping them.

Sorry, I, too, get upset with the complaints about our local newspaper. If you don't like it, DON'T subscribe to it.

In reality newspapers always print news that is old. The evening news reports news that is old. If you want to stay current in this world, either keep TV on, there is no shortage of media feeds from events taking place in this world, or turn on your computer!

The Sun is a bit of relief from all the tragedy, murder and mayhem that takes place in the world today. If you want to know what's happening, turn on CNN, The Weather Channel, NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, almost any station and get up to the minute information and pictures....

Rant over.

One persons "silliness"...is another persons "seriousness."

To mikeod, this is the type of anger and vitriol to which I was referring.

Might I suggest, there is a huge difference?

One is criticism of the paper.

The other is criticism of a fellow member.

I think that the local Daily Fishwrap does a wonderful job ...... of it's primary function of being a de facto marketing arm of TV.

Here is the way I view this question....if I buy a comic book, I know what I will be reading. It won't be a novel like War and Peace. When I buy the Daily Sun I know that it is a "local, small town" paper...it's not the WallStreet Journal and I don't expect it to be. We lived in a suburb of Atlanta and I bought the Atlanta Journal Constitution for world news. I bought our local Cherokee Ledger to keep up with what was happening in our community. Both papers gave me value. The Daily Sun is our "small town" local interest Publication. They don't claim to be anything else. You don't go to a hardware store to buy bread. Don't buy the Daily Sun and expect US News and World Report. They ARE a "Newspaper". It is the news of what is happening here in the Villages. That news is of interest to many of us.

Might I suggest that it is entirely possible to criticize a statement without denigrating the speaker.

if i was a betting person, i'd bet that the folks in moore, ok would be happy to have ANY paper delivered to their driveway in the morning!

complaining about something you don't have to buy, much less read is inane!

I am sure, given the chance, they would apologize to you folks for not measuring up to your obvious lofty standards.

Why you folks have this need to criticize and pan something you do not have any obligation to buy or read is a bit strange to me.
I do not understand what is going on here! I find myself agreeing more and more with Bucco! Good going, Bucco, on your reply. That is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Can it be that great minds think alike?

Default Lift me up

I, for one, can appreciate not seeing these tragedies plastered all over the Daily Sun. You can turn on any TV news station or listen to the radio for the latest and not so great news making headlines. There is so much sadness in the world these days that I cannot continuously listen or watch it everywhere. With the shootings, tornados, bombings and other disasters happening it can really take a toll on us. I don't mean to sweep anything under the rug because in my own way I mourn for these people and their families. It truly is heartbreaking. But, I also need to know the good in the world and what's going on in this "bubble" we live in. I know that when my heart gets heavy with everything I see on news TV, that when I open up the Daily Sun I can warm my heart just a bit with all the good happening here. I like all of the positive "news" in the Sun.

You make an excellent point, but I need to ask one thing.

Did the Cherokee Ledger, through their op/ed pages, supposed current national events and no disclaimer otherwise...... bother to pretend that they were a real newspaper?

But hey, you're points are well taken.

Those of us who would like to see a higher standard from them, should pretty much just give it up.
