In 1968 my senior year at St. Pete High, about a 100 miles from here. For homecoming all the guys wanted to grow a goatee and dye it green like our mascot, the Green Devil. They wouldn't allow us to break the rules, no facial hair allowed as well as no hair below the collar. We were also required to wear dress shirts, dress pants and dress shoes and socks to school everyday. Five years later I drove by the school and everyone was wearing shorts and sandals and hair down to their shoulders. Our school was also not air conditioned but it was a great school, oldest in Florida.

In my all boys Catholic High School in Jersey City in 1968 we were upset with all the rules. On college campuses all over there were protests. We planned to upset our system at noon on a friday. When the clock struck 12, in protest of all that was wrong with the world we would all take off our ties! Being good Catholic boys, at noon we all chickened out. So much for "in unity there is strength".

I think it hysterical! When I taught we had crazy dress up days and they were great fun. I doubt that it was ever meant to denigrate anyone.

Yep. I agree as well. We had "Tacky Tourist" dress-up days in the schools in my hometown ... a town that had never seen a tourist, much less a snowbird. Just some goofy fun for the kids. Nothing wrong with that.

New Jersey produces some wonderful folks and NJbchbum is one of them. However people from New Jersey are always incorrect when they say that they have corn and tomatoes grown there that are as good as those grown in Ohio.

It's quite entertaining at the squares. Especially the dogs wearing a visor and sunglasses being pushed in a stroller.

Students in visors, sunscreen, floppy hats and sunglasses crowded the halls Tuesday at The Villages High School.

They were expressing their school spirit on “tacky tourist” dress-up day, one of numerous activities taking place during homecoming week at the high school.

We used to call them simply "tacky" parties. The idea was to dress as tacky as you could. All in fun and directed at no one. There was usually a prize for the tackiest. Maybe they weren't called tourist tacky because Lubbock is not exactly a tourist destination?
This good clean fun is a whole lot better than druggin' and bringing weapons to school and fighting over some girl/guy.

So true. We've lived in suburban neighborhoods (before TV) that had "Tacky & Tasteless" parties on the deck or driveway. The food trays often included Spam, Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill and other wines like Ripple, MD 20/20 and Wild Irish Rose, Mateus, and Lancers from our HS days. Clothing included the All-American Leisure Suit (!!!!!), etc. from the 70s.

And you're so right about this type of fun at school instead of current trends from the dark side of society.
