Our first POSSIBLE Hurricane is on the way. Indicators right now show it to be a mild one and that is good. I have attached a link to what I feel is the finest Weather Map on the net.

You can program this map to advise you when weather comes into your predetermined range.

We are fortunate to have several days notice when storms are on the way, but we should have a tool to be as prepared as we can.

Ok. We'll be down there in a couple of weeks, so I bought it. $2.00 But they don't give much information on how to use it. I got a receipt from Pay Pal but no acknowledgement directly from the site. Can you advise? Should this be put on the desktop? I do like the map.

The Villages is a ways from either coast so hurricanes are not going to be a problem here. We will get the rain and some wind but not to worry about tide surges. Give me a hurricane any day over a tornado!

That's probably the greatest threat we would have hear in the Villages is a tornado spawned by a very weak hurricane coming through. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History...wned_tornadoes

Hurricanes are strange indeed. Several years ago we got sustained winds of 60-70mph for several days in OHIO, aftermath of a HURRICANE! It knocked out power and did a lot of damage.

So we can have Hurricanes in TV...but won't get the other damage like on the coasts as badly just as Buggyone says.

We have had a LOT of rain the past few days.

If you all come to our house tonight we will have an ark building. Beer will be served.

Not only can I not figure out how to use it, I can't see how to buy it anywhere. All I see is a map similar to Weather.com with some advertising around it. I don;t see any way of programming this to send you an alarm or any link that enables you to purchase anything.

I don't want to minimize the devastating effects of a tornado, but the odds of being hit by one are very, very small. We have had 16 tornadoes here in 43 years. That's about one every three years. Twelve of those have been F-0 which are relatively weak.

Tornadoes also usually impact a very small area. So although the impact on those affected is severe, there are relatively few who get hit.

Eight deaths in 43 years? You have more chance of getting killed in a car accident or a golf cart accident. Is there any information as to which of those 16 tornadoes caused the deaths? In other words, did the deaths all occur from the F2 and F3 tornadoes?

I know that a lot of people here lived through a tornado a few years ago and I'm sure that it was a horrifying experience but I'm not going to get myself all in a panic over the very slim chance of my house being hit by a tornado. I see the look in some people's eyes every time the hear thunder or wind and I don't want to become one of those people, living in fear every moment of their lives.

I have some canned foods and bottled water stored in my cabinets and I have flashlights and a battery powered radio. It would be nice to have a map with a rain warning like this because I like to know when it's going to rain. But I'm not going to live my entire life worrying about a tornado hitting. There's really not much I can do about it and I don't want to live every day in fear.

The best we can do is to prepare. Have supplies in a safe area in your house, have a weather radio to alert you, you can even get an alert app for your cell phone. Recognizing the potential for danger, preparing for it and taking appropriate measures should nasty weather hits is important, after that, continue on with life. Nasty weather is a given in so many parts of the country, not just this part of Florida. Hopefully this storm will just take a turn, head out to sea and impact no one.

It is also useful for thunderstorms, flooding, inclement weather, etc.

You are right about tidal surges, but don't get too comfortable about being inland to protect us from wind. The furthest coast is the east about 80 miles. When hurricane Whelma hit us on the east coast in S. Fla. it came ashore on the west coast 160 miles away. It gained strength and clobbered us on the east coast. It was large enough that it extended over the gulf and Atlantic and was able to intensify. We in TV are in the narrowest part of the state and a large hurricane could do the same thing. We seem to be in a zone for some reason that storms seem to pass us but there is always a chance someday for a powerful storm to enter either coast and hit us. By the way, winds in a cat 5 hurricane rival the most powerful tornados, only cover a much larger area.
