Thereay be two sets of ID numbers. One unclonable, and the other programmable.

A Tag ID (TID) and a separate serial number.

This would use the tag ID (TID) in the transponder along with the serial number. Each RFID chip has a unique serial number that cannot be changed, which identifies the chip as unique. A serial number is then written to the tag's memory. You could read the TID and serial number and make sure there was a correct match, in order to ensure the tag was not cloned.

Imagine true security badges, credit cards, and other IDs in use today for access or spending.
There is no question that new cards could be issued that could not be cloned. But, without issuing new cards, can the new software differentiate between a valid working card and a clone?

My cards are 23 years old and we purchased 2 additional cards back then as well so we had one for each car, one for the golf cart and one for the motorcycle. I'm hoping all 4 will still work. Guess I'll find out on Monday. Hopefully their records go back that far. Guess we'll see. Keeping my finger's crossed.

I agree.
So many residents take off from barriers like NASCAR drivers.

Now here's an idea that could be implemented: Only have the red button on the guest entrance side. Force non-residents to go past gate house (where one exists). Would enhance the false appearance of a gated community and perhaps discourage some of those who have no legitimate business entering a residential section. It would be similar to a true gated community where all non-residents have to stop at the gatehouse, except they would not have to be checked in, just waved through or hit the button where there is no gatehouse, or it is unattended. I think the prospect of a clear camera image of their face would also discourage those with ill intent.

Yes, there will be times when a resident drops, fumbles or forgets their card, but then we could ostracize them on social media, as usual

So 4 gate cards for residents, instead of two would help if red residents button removed. 2 carts, 2cars, or a car and ________.

Important Gate System Update Notice – UPDATED INFORMATION
The District Government is implementing an update to our gate system to support future enhanced functionality.
Please note the following important information:
• Beginning JUNE 2024, the gate system will only operate with valid cards active in the system.
• This update to the card reader software does not affect the existing red button functionality. The red button can still be used to access gates throughout the community.
• If one of your cards is not working, please bring both cards that were originally issued as a pair to one of our offices for assistance.
Our offices are located at:
• NORTH SATELLITE OFFICE 1200 Avenida Central in La Hacienda
• DISTRICT CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER 984 Old Mill Run in Lake Sumter Landing
• SOUTH SATELLITE OFFICE 4856 S. Morse Blvd. just south of SR 44
Please contact Customer Service at 352-753-4508 or visit one of our offices to determine if your card needs replacement.
We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation as we work to upgrade our community's access system.
From working at the gates, my understanding is that the cloned mirror chips will no longer work.

The problem with having non-residents be mechanically forced to go through one gate, and not the other:

Many (MANY) visitors go through the wrong gate. That'd mean - when they get to the wrong gate, they'll now have to back out from their position in front of the gate, so they can get into the correct lane. They can't do that if there's a line of cars behind them.

Imagine the nightmare on 466 if that's how it worked at the Morse gate.

So, why can't the software designer do a simple test and publlsh the results explaining why the clones will no longer operate?

I acknowledged that possibility in my post. But as Judge Judy like to state "You can't fix stupid"

Why should they???? People who have these cloned cards just need to know they will no longer work; they don't need to know why. Remember, no one should have a cloned card in the first place.

So now with rainy season coming, we will have to put our windows down to open the gates. How stupid is this?

Tens of thousands of residents have been doing just that for decades before you arrived - you will survive.

Been here over ten years, 4 or 5 times it was raining as I rolled up to a gate.
I got a little closer, put my card next the closed window and the gate opened.
Not stupid at all.

Not exactly. When I called The Villages District Administration office, they told me that there is no rule against cloning the gate cards for personal use.

I would really like this. I know rolling down the window and using the key card is a 1st world problem but it annoys the crap out of me every. single. time.
