Would you rather it had its own flagpole?

I grew up in Kentucky, technically a state loyal to the Union, but being a border state loyalties were divided and often members of the same household served on opposite sides. As a previous poster accurately stated it was called The War of Northern Aggression by many in the south. I had a great-great grandfather who served on each side of the conflict. I have spent many years studying my family history and the gggfather who fought for the Confederacy owned no slaves so I doubt he fought and died to protect other’s rights to do so. The war was about more than just slavery. It was also about the economy, resources, and states rights in an era where people felt the government had become radical and too controlling. (Ring any bells?) Much like the issues that led to the American Revolution. I am no less or more proud of one ancestor over another and I make no claim to know what their personal motivations were at the time. Just as no one knows what that person’s motivation is for flying that flag in the Village of Richmond. Maybe they’re saying it’s time for another civil war. Maybe they are history buffs and the Civil War was their area of expertise. Maybe they are just proud of their southern heritage, and not because of slavery necessarily. There are areas of the country today where conversations are being had about secession by serious and intelligent people. Whether or not they are right is very subjective, but their right to discuss whatever they want is not.

At any rate, we are grown people here who have lived through a lot of history and an overwhelming amount of change. We have all been exposed to many radical ideas over the course of our fairly long lives and we have survived. Our skins should be thick enough to be able to handle being around people of differing ideas without melting down. The day they outlaw the right to have differing opinions is the day you should really start to worry, not the day you see a piece of cloth of a certain design on a flagpole.

Grits are only good if they are long cooking, to correct consistency, usually stone ground. I find most restaurants can’t properly make grits, since you can’t reheat, and usually use a quick grit mix.

Flying Biscuit makes a ok grit, if you would like to try again.
Take a trip to Charleston, SC... Go to "Fleet's Landing"... The best Shrimp & Grits I've ever had...

I declare a violation of Godwin's Law... Your point is invalid...

The confederate flag was flown during the Civil War when 11 states broke from the nation to defend the practice of slavery. And most recently it has been claimed by white supremacists and other hate groups , such as those who stormed our capitol on January 6. It has been used by the Ku Klux Klan for decades. In 1956, two years after the Supreme Court had declared school segregation illegal, the state of Georgia incorporated the battle flag into its official state flag as a symbol of resistance to integration. In 1960, when six-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to attend an all-white school in the South, she was met by crowds of white people who threw stones at her, called her the N-word, and waved the Confederate flag. So I laugh at those who say the flag represents Southern Heritage. For black southerners it certainly represents their southern heritage - terror, torture, and oppression.

Lou Lou’s in Louisville. Chef and owner is from Louisville, trained in NOLA. (Restaurant is named after both, There isn’t one thing I don’t love at that restaurant. Origami site is small, but they are opening a new place near downtown.

I have eaten at Fleet’s, and while I really liked their S&G, Lou Lou’s is still my favorite. I grew up making grits at a young age. Alway got our grits directly from a stone mill. Now we add different cheeses, and always use pink shrimp

I have lived in New England all my life ..... until I moved here 5 years ago. I'm a dyed in the wool Yankee. However, I find nothing wrong with seeing the "Confederate" flag waving in the breeze. It's a source of pride for many southeners, and it really has nothing to do with slavery. It's just the misinformation that has been put out there for several generations, that people start to believe that misnomer. And if the Confederate flag offends people, then I feel sorry for them because they really are emotionally weak, thin skinned people.
Go visit a Civil War cemetery in S. Carolina and read the headstones. There are hundreds of Yankee dead buried there, and their burial was respectful and honorable. The headstones are engraved with the soldier's name, unit, state and date of death, and even today, the cemetery is well preserved, and open to all visitors.
