Default Fraud alert -- must read for Sweetbay customers

It is important for Sweetbay customers who used credit and check cards to read this post.

Thank you Tony for bumping this up on the site. It is really important, and I hope it shows up in tomorrow's Daily Sun. I am afraid that there are many people who don't regularly check their bank accounts on line and may not find out about unauthorized activities until they receive their statement.

There are 2 threads regarding this issue...I suggest you combine them into one.

I put this thread here to refer to the thread in Non-villages discussion. I think there is only one thread discussing the issue itself.

This one just points the way.

I thought it was extremely important for Villagers to know of this fraud. Maybe I am supersensitive to this type of fraud because it was recently perpetrated on me.

About 2 weeks ago I received a fraud alert from my Master Card Company after my card was frozen due to unusual activity. I called the bank and sure enough I had 3 $100 charges for gas in Miami and I have never been in Miami. I could not figure out where my card was lifted from and once I read the article in the Village Sun it became obvious for I did make purchases at SweetBay during December2007 and March 2008.

So look for unusual GAS charges against your card!! Also the press release out out by SweetBay and picked up by the newpaper was aimed at what teh consumer could do to protect his or her interest.....I certainly would have liked to see what Sweetbay was doing or at least get more assurance that Sweetbay was not goingto let this happen or Why did it happen in the first place. I plan to contact the ocal Sweetbay manager and voice my concerns and to tell him that I DID experience a problem and it came form his store...in the Villages !!!

BTW my bank (USAA) was great and took care of all unauthorized charges and the fact that they were on top of this so quick I give them alot of credit.

784...got me too; I had purchases there in December and in late Jan my card got hit for a rail pass in Italy and an online ancestry.com membership. My credit card company immediately cancelled the card and covered the fraudulent charges and issued a new card (which I have since used at Sweetbay .... arrrgggh). I had no idea where the vulnerability could have come from, but, now pretty sure it was the local Sweetbay.

I was in there yesterday (paying in cash) and mentioned to the checker my tale of woe...she didn't seem like it was much of a concern to them. You're right, best to let the manager know so that they can see how many people they have victimized with their carelessness.

I'm underimpressed with Sweet Bay's response to this fiasco. Evidently they are at fault, yet they offer their customers nothing more that a belated heads-up and advice to be careful and maybe sign up with a credit watchdog agency. I would expect them to offer at a minimum a 6 month subscription to one of these services to all customers who have used credit or debit cards or written checks in their stores. If I misunderstood and they have do more to address the issue, I apologize. If not, they should lose custom.

This has also happened up her in Maine at the local Hannaford. Fortunately, I canceled my debit card before anything happened to me. The Hannaford up here is covering any fraudulent charges as well as some of the local credit unions. Hannaford has taken ownership of the problem and very up front in trying to help people out.

Hannaford and Sweet Bay are both owned by the same company, Delhaize Group SA. Evidently their joint computer systems were hacked in December.

Muncie
The response by Sweetbay was pathetic.......rather than telling its consumers how the company would better protect its customers, it told the customers we should be alert.......and I must say after the fact. If this happened in December 2007 and they did not discover the problem until March 2008, that definitely says something about their security over credit card informtaion.
I spoke to a cashier at Sweetbay yesterday and she said she had over $1000 in charges from Walmart.com that had to be credited.
Again the manager of this store needs to be alerted first hand of the problems comming from his store and that the corporate response was insufficicnet and not very timely!!
