Then why is Whirlpool rated below GE in overall appliance reliability in Consumer Reports buying guide. This deal has nothing to do with quality, but everything to do with.........................$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

All we can do is hope the new builds get a better product. GE appliances, especially the refrigerators, have really deteriorated. I've had to have them out 5 times for the same noise problem on one fridge.

I'm hoping that some of the reason for the replacement was the fact that GE was just not a good product any longer and not just the money, but I seriously doubt it.

And why shouldn't they factor in the poaching fee to the money? Just good business, right?

GE has a number of kitchen and laundry appliances ranked pretty high by Consumer Reports.

It looks like most of them are the high end/price models like Profile, Cafe etc.

I've had many negative issues with GE specifically the fridge. Had repairman so many times and fortunately I recorded each visit as well as the exact part being repaired or replaced. Didn't take long to realize the same parts were repeatedly being replaced. I finally demanded that we be given a replacement as I believed what I had was a lemon and I don't mean the kind you squeeze. Yes, we got another fridge...unfortunately of course it was another GE but at least I got the first piece of junk out of the house.

Don't have a problem, but the" grass is not always greener on the other side". In my real estate business in Lexington, i've purchased 100's of appliances for apartments over the years.I've had the best luck with GE, and very little with Whirlpool . But i must confess ,none of the appliances today are as good as in the past.Just replaced a 35 year old GE electric stove and refrigerator, only because i finally got tired of the harvest gold color and we were remodeling the entire apartment.

I believe there are kits that change the appliance colors as desired.

You should have kept the barely broke in Refer and Stove.

Let's see...in the 4 years we've owned our home the GE:

o Washing machine has died, twice,

o The dishwasher wiped a bearing,

o The refridgerator's PC board died,

o The microwave burned itself out, and

o The light in the stove hood exploded, shattering the glass "window", covering the top of the stove with the remains of the bulb and the glass window.

So far, knock on wood, the dryer and the stove have been trouble free.

If it's true that the Whirlpools are less reliable than the GEs, the appliance repair business in this area should do well, really, really well.

Oh, almost forgot, the main motor in our A/C unit burned out too. Not a GE product though, can't blame them for that...

We just got the December 2010 Consumer Reports and for electric ranges GE was very good and a little better than Whirlpool. Both were at the top end of the reliability report.
GE electric ranges needed repair 6% of the time and Whirlpool 7% of the time.

Just goes to show, I think, how things and products can differ.

Not a single one of my GE appliances, all installed in January 2005, has given me the slightest problem. True, I'm keeping a careful eye on a potential rust-out in my dishwasher (on average used only once a week), but everything else appears just fine!

This forum has many complaints about GE. I suspect that, had Whirlpool or "SeniorProducts" (fictitious name) been the Developer's product of choice over the last few years, folks would be finding fault with them!

Until my GE stuff really gives up the ghost, I'm perfectly content!

This happened to me also. Twice on the same side. The second time I replaced the glass with plexiglass. It is actually clearer and brighter.

Asside from that, the only other problem I have had in 9 years is the oven ignitor went out in the oven.

So I have no complaints about GE.

Default Time will show the Whirlpool products to be less satisfactory

overall. None of the brands are what they used to be.
Used to be means to me when the products were made in the USA. Most today are not. And to make it even worse there is multiple out sourcing....a product or component(s) are outsourced to reduce cost. The the company that outsourced originally is going around the world for even cheaper components. Hence the traceability and tracking of quality is no where close to the way it was when the products were made in the USA.

The developer could care less about the company they source the end product from. They operate strictly on the cost per unit in their contract. The low bidder gets the job. And to keep unit pricing some what sacred, they offer sign up bonuses. Sometimes it is money and sometimes it is free units added to the order.

If anybody thinks it is not about $$$ one is just not realistic about the objective of the business(es).

GE will get a shot at it again when ever the new Whirlpool contract is on it's last legs. It is a misnomer for any of the name brand companies to be called manufacturers. They are not any more.

I'll bet you my GE appliances are louder than yours LOL.
Good riddance to GE they have been going downhill for a long time.
I am an expediter at a large company and almost everything we get from GE is made somewhere else . Unfortunately almost everything is made somewhere else.

I too miss the days when we could buy quality appliances with quality parts and quality workmanship, proudly made in the USA.
