Golf Cart speeding
I just returned from The Villages for a two week stay. I was well aware of all the mentions of speeding and the police patrols. Needless to say I saw a whole lot of patrol cars out there and did see one cart pulled over by a patrol car on Buena Vista Blvd. We rented our cart from Grandpa and Grandma's Village Buggies. Scott informed me of the increased police patrols. I had a cart with high speed gears on it and used my GPS to tell me my speed and stayed within a mile of the 20mph. We stopped by their shop one day to look at what they had and how they do it and a lady came in and started to tell them they were wrong for putting high speed gears on their carts. She was told that you have a car that goes 120 to 130 mph but that doesn't mean you should go that speed all the time. Should they lower the engines and gearing on cars to a max of say 75mph? I was told that almost everyone is putting speedometers on the their carts now. Also we went to Cart's and Clubs up in Ocala and they pretty much put speedometers on all of their new and used carts.

I like the idea of putting speedometers in golf carts.
I for one, would like to know how fast I am going to ensure not getting a ticket. |

Then I got stopped by the sheriff and was told my cart was too fast. I just got a warning, but that was enough. The cart went in for normal service where I bought it (I was worried about warranty being affected) and told them to put a speedometer on it so I can be sure I'm at a legal speed when on the roadways. Got the cart back and they had installed a speedometer AND adjusted the controller so my electric cart only goes 20. And slow up the hills, and starts from stop like a slug on Sominex. Soooo, after spending over $600, I'm almost back to where I started. I spoke to the service people and was told they cannot let a cart go out that exceeds the limit. I asked what did they think I put the speedometer in for and was told some people just like to know their speed. Nothing was going to convince him to put the cart back to what it was. I'm now awaiting a phone call from the manager to discuss the issue. If they had called and told me they had to adjust the controller, I would have said to forget the speedometer. With the cart as it is, I don't need a speedometer. I did not authorize additional work. Plus, the cart was in the condition they gave it to me after the motor upgrade. So, refund the money or put the cart back as it was. So, check before having a speedometer installed to be sure you don't encounter the same situation. |

Speeding
As of now, the police have no jurisdiction on the multi-modal trails. However, they will pull over a golf cart for speeding on the roads. This will also cost a lot of money due to the speeding ticket, traffic school, unlicensed vehicle, etc. Keep it simple, do not goose your golf cart to go above 19.8 mph unless it is street legal and do not have open beer containers in the cart while on the roads.

I have an EZGO 2010 RXV electric that came from the dealer going 22.9 mph.I know this because I have a fitness watch with GPS.What's great about this cart is it doesn't lose speed going uphill.I bought it new this way and have never tampered with anything . I don't want to get a ticket & I don't want to lose the speed this cart is capable of going. Are the cops going to pull me over for going 3 miles under the "speed limit"?

If there really is a crackdown on speeding I would think these dealers would get caught pretty quickly. If you get in trouble for going 23MPH, you are going to say I bought the cart from so and so, have not modified it at all....... which should lead to a knock on the dealer's door..... |

aj, I agree, it baffles me how a dealer can sell a cart that goes over 20MPH without liablity. bosox, you said are cops going to pull me over for going 3 MPH under the speed limit, didn't you mean 3 MPH over the speed limit....gn

A reminder. A golf cart travelling 25 MPH is not ticketed for speeding as it is not exceeding the speed limit. It is ticketed because when it exceeded 20 MPH it was no longer a golf cart but was an unregistered motor vehicle with improper equipment, no insurance (the insurance company insured a golf cart not a car) no seat belts, no wipers, probably improper lighting, etc.
A speeding ticket can usually be handled by mail. The unregistered vehicle charge requires a trip to Bushnell and face a judge. Added to fines and court costs is the cost of making the cart to meet the "capable of exceeding 20 MPH" statute. The law is quite clear about this. Those dealers selling carts that exceed 20 MPH may find themselves liable for their actions. However, those purchasing them cannot plead ignorance. Bottom line: if your cart is capable (capable is a key word and part of the statute) of exceeding 20 MPH even if you are not actually exceeding 20 MPH you are in violation of the statute. |

I think if "capable" is the key word, we are all safe. I'm certain my Yamaha cart is "capable" of exceeding 20MPH. I might have to tweek it, but it's "capable" ....

Dumb Driver
I don't know about cart speed, but today I experienced one of the dumbest drivers ever (car). I came out of the cart tunnel (toward Southern Trace Shopping Center) under CR466 up to the stop sign on Wedgwood. I had the stop sign (or stop pole). A woman going north on CR101 and turning right on to Wedgwood stops dead on CR101 waiting for me to cross Wedgwood. I waived her on (I HAD THE STOP SIGN, SHE HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY). She wouldn't move. I got out of the cart and pointed to the stop sign and furiously waved her on...She looked at me and just hunched her shoulders! Cars started backing up on CR101, blowing horns, etc. She just sat there, turning her hands up in a gesture of "What?". I screamed "Go Go GO. I have the stop sign!! She would not move. Cars began turning around her to go down Wedgwood. Carts backed up behind me down into the tunnel with cart drivers yelling at me to go.
I finally had to cross the street...almost getting hit by a car coming the other way. Why do cars to this?...stop for carts...when they have the right of way? Some body is gonna get killed if carts think they can just shoot across intersections when they don't have the right of way...

I wish it was just a seasonal thing.
People stop for carts year round. They do it for one reason, and one reason only: it annoys me!
