According to my sister, if it rains or even POURS, you just put on a rain coat and continue to play golf. I'm considering taking up this game but, honestly, I do not think it would be much fun to play golf when it's raining.

Are points assessed against you if you cancel last minute because it is raining?

This was told to me early on in my golfing adventure, some forty years ago by my Sweetie.

It never rains on a golf course.

You only cancel if it's lightning.

That's what my Sweetie said. Our grandchildren have gotten throughly wet but still trust their papa.

No points if it's raining at your tee time and at the course but, you would need to call the starter at the course you were supposed to play.

Since moving to The Villages, my standards have changed:

I no longer golf in rain, quick shower sure, but not rain, especially if I am on the 4th or 13 hole (see refund policy on championship courses)
If the tempurature will not get out of 50s, wind will be looked at and we will likely bail out. Remember it is 58 degrees at 2:58 for 30 seconds

That would be a great day in MA for winter golf for sure, but here? I can almost assure you tomorrow will be a better day

Will you get penalized?

Most likely you will not have any cancellation points on a rainy or cold day. You will get one point like you played. On cold days they post cancellation policy on golfthevillages.com

I don't think that is true. They rarely cancel even if it is raining but I agree you should call but have your umbrella ready or take 3 points. Chances are it willnot be cancelled.

If you call and cancel and it is raining you get 1 point. Just did it.

I can't speak for championship courses, but executive course do not assess penalty points for rain cancellations ... if you call the shack. If you just don't show up, you will be assesed 3 points. I run a neighborhood group and follow their point totals quite closely and know this to be true. It need not even be raining when you cancel. If it has rained and is still threatening to rain more, they are quite forgiving. You will still be assessed a single point as if you played, but that's all.

As to what people do in the rain around here, most do not play (based on observations of the exec course behind our house), but you see a few diehards that will golf in any weather - including with lightning striking all around.

I would agree with you about how my golf standards have changed from golfing back in CT versus here in TV. But I would add one thing. When that weather radio went off about 6:45am today announcing a tornado watch until 3pm that pretty much made up the minds of my golf group today about not playing.

To better distribute tee times points are assigned based on an individuals past seven days play. One point for play, two points if you cancel a reservation before the day of play and three points if you cancel day of play. No points assigned if the course is closed and one play point assigned if you cancel due to weather. The brochure linked below explains the policy as does the free Good Golf school.

We played at Sandhill last week and it began to rain but Starter informed us that the course was still open and anyone that cancelled but called was assessed 2 points, or 3 if they did not call. He said the Course is aways open. Perhaps it depends on conditions or which starter you talk to so it is a good idea to check with the Starter although I do not think he is the person assessing the points, I could be wrong about that.

Did you check the system a few days later to see if indeed the points were assessed? Could it be that the starter was assuming what the computer would do? Like I said before, we have never been assessed penalty points because of rain. Even on marginally cold days, those who called the shack and cancelled for cold were not assessed penalty points - just the one point that they would normally get for playing.

We have been assessed points because of calling with a rain cancellation. Wonder if it matters who is working the shack and how they submit it.
