So my take on this thorny issue is simple.......

My insurance MAY be voided if I modify my cart to go fast. I know I read in my Yamaha brochure that my warranty IS voided if I modify the cart to go faster.

So here's what I did - I just left the cart alone and drive along at 20 MPH (or 19.4 or whatever it is) and enjoy the ride. If I am in a hurry, I take the car.

My sentiments exactly, Steve. And actually, depending on where you are going to and from in TV's, in the height of the season, the car MIGHT not be any faster!! It is so beautiful to drive around TV's in a cart, speed is not the biggest factor in me using them, of course. In fact, when I see so many people in a hurry that live there, wether it be in a cart or a car, I wonder, and sometimes even say to them, why did you move here if you are in such a hurry? Seems to me they could have stayed in the rat race where they came from.

At the risk of creating an echo on this - you are right that the cart may not be slower than the car. I use the cart whenever I can. Drove yesterday from Liberty Park to Cracker Barrel. Nice, long cart ride - riding around in the cart is one of the most enjoyable things I do here, why would I want to get it over with quicker?

Sometimes I think retirees have way too much time to figure out ways to break rules to their advantage but say they're within the law.

Us NYers must think alike. I spent my whole life rushing around. I don't want to do it in the Villages in retirement. I also don't want to risk having no insurance when I need it. Tampering with golf cart speed exposes me to lose my retirement portfolio as well as my home and all my possessions. I don't want to take that risk. If others do, Gold bless them. They my need it.

The law for 19+ plus miles per hour may be correct. As a matter of reference, my standard stock golf cart (which has a speedometer) can reach 22.8 MPH and 90% of the time we neither gain or lose distance on the cart in front of us. Of the remaining 10% most pass us "very" quickly. This makes some sense when you consider most carts like mine use stock batteries and motors, so therefore they reach the same top end speed. My only reason for bring this up is that it gives all the readers an idea what the "average" speed for most of the carts in the Villages are traveling at.

My cart is stock and I don't know how fast it goes. If it is going faster than 20 mph is my insurance no good? If I don't know how fast it is going how does the ins.co. know? If I have an accident will the cart be impounded to check the actual speed capable of being reached?

no problem, the insurance company has better things to do,then check your speed of your cart. relax, lots of nothing here.never heard of one person who had problem

Just remember, all LSV's MUST have a VIN number and if you are going over 19.5 MPH you can get a ticket if you get caught plus driving without proper license and registration. Just a word to the wize....

However, if your cart is involved in an accident the insurance claims adjuster will check to see if the cart has been altered to exceed 20MPH. If it has you may find the policy has been voided and all you get is your premium returned. They insured a golf cart not a (an?) LSV.

I'm tired of being passed by speeding golf carts in the golf cart lane. And when I'm passed, it's usually by a considerable amount. I wish everyone would stick to the rules and not debate nuances; we'd all be a lot safer. Speeding is speeding, and if anyone gets in a wreck because of someone else's souped up cart, I hope they sue big-time. Carts do not have the protection cars give us, so we all need to be careful of each other and drive safely.
