I also never go over the center line when driving an automobile. That is dangerous. I will never understand why drivers move to the left of the center line when a golf cart is coming up on their right in the MMP. There is room for both of you unless you are driving a huge truck with a wide load.
Actually on the MMP in order right of way it starts with the pedestrian, bicyclists, then golf carts.

Which is why coffeebean posted what she posted. Because no matter who has the "right of way" - it's the pedestrian who's going to get hurt the worst if there's a duel between a bipedal and a golf cart It's in the pedestrian's best interest to scoot over if they see someone coming. Not all golf cart drivers are responsible - and in fact, some folks drive them because they are no longer allowed to drive a car, because their eyesight is too poor, their reaction time is too poor, their ability to understand stop-signs are too poor, or whatever else - and their physicians and loved ones have taken their car keys away from them. If you want to take your chances and play russian roulette and hope that the epitaph on your gravestone doesn't read "Here lies ThirdOfFive; he had the right of way" then - move to the side if you're walking/running and a golf cart is heading your way.

I'll finish the thought for ya then.

In the Villages, people don't stop and look both ways. They just - walk. They don't care that a car is only a few feet away from them going 25mph. They expect the car to slam on the brake and let the person step off the curb, walk along the street for a few paces, then meander leisurely to the other side.

Happens all the time at strip-malls. They don't try to cross where cars have stop signs. They just cross wherever they feel like, whenever they feel like, and think "right of way" applies to them even before they step off the curb.

I had some lady yell at me one time because of that. I was driving past Hungry Howie's and no one was at the curb or in the street near me, and she just strode out of the store and off the sidewalk and slapped the side of my car and yelled that I was supposed to stop for her.

She should've gone to the corner, stopped, looked both ways, noticed that I was RIGHT THERE a few feet away and moving in a vehicle that could have harmed her, and waited til I passed where she was standing, and THEN stepped off the curb.

But no - it was MY fault for not being able to guess that she was going to pick that spot to step off the curb and cross the road.

I'm the one who would've been in trouble if I had hit her. I'm glad I didn't. But pedestrians do NOT always have the right of way. You only have it if you're already in the road before the car comes. You don't have the right to step off the safety of the sidewalk or curb, or step INTO traffic that is already there. You just flat out don't have that right.
Clearly, I agree 100%

I just don't understand why people (on this thread) don't get this.

So, when there is a cart coming at us (and no other carts, bikes, or walkers anywhere around), our observation is this: When MEN are driving the oncoming cart, they pull way over to their left, giving us wide berth which provides us with a comfortable safety buffer. On the other hand, WOMEN do not do this and instead (inexplicably) generally hold to their current lane on the right side of the path.

Suffice to say we don't understand this phenomenon, ...
I would not think of trying to explain your phenomenon because I don't believe your observations are factual.

From your description, one could only take that to mean that all men and all women behave in gender-specific ways. There have been posts by each gender that suggest that you are wrong.

Recommendation: The two of you go out with clipboards and pencils. Each of you (independently, to see how accurate the measurements are) tally the number of men and women separately as well as the behavior. It would be 4 cells, but undoubtedly there would be an edge case for how much room was ceded and maybe some gender uncertainty. Report each of your unedited tallies. Expect to measure at least 400 drivers to understand the distribution of driver genders. Better, get at least 400 of each.

Once you have the facts, then we can measure the validity of your hypothesis (what you called a phenomenon).

Yep, and you better be careful when cart pops out of tunnel into roundabout cause majority don’t look left or yield.

Because the reason walkers are supposed to stay on the side where they face oncoming traffic is so they can see if the vehicle is making the effort required to give them the space required. If the driver is clearly not moving then the walker has time to move off to the side.

But you didn't say you are an impaired driver and may miss seeing the walker. You said if you see a walker they better get out of your way. It was pretty clear, that no matter your ability, you would not give way to a walker because you feel entitled to the path and if you hit the walker that's on them. That's what you meant no matter if you backtrack now.

No, she clearly stated in her explanation later that she would not hit the walker. And I believe her.

I don't believe she would hit the walker, either, BUT the initial response did not have that clarity at all, and many don't get to the 25th page 5 posts down, 3rd sentence in, to see a clarification after several initial supporting posts to the original post.

The point is that it took a lot of negative posts, including the defiant show me the fine print by the OP, before she issued a clarification. . like finally, the dumpster fire got big enough to get her attention. .

I think each resident should be given classes on how to safely maneuver on the MMPs. This would help with some of the confusion and keep everyone safe.

I read the laws regarding Right of Way in Florida. Quite a bit of misinformation on this thread. It would be helpful if we all knew and followed the same rules.

Not me! I believe most people would not INTENTIONALLYhit someone. But sometimes there an unfortunate 'OOPS". THAT is what scares me.
