Doesn’t work in a limited inventory environment. They want to maximize profit on each vehicle

I don't care what THEY want. If they want my business, we'll negotiate on the OTD price, not on some intermediate price and then have additional charges or fees added on during the paperwork phase.

And if we negotiate on the OTD price and they try to add something on during the paperwork phase, I'm walking OTD for real.

Yup. It happened to me, years ago. They "lost" my keys when they took my car out back to get a quote on a trade in.

Since this was well before cell phones, I asked if I could use their phone to call my girlfriend, as I was running late...

They handed me the phone, I dialed the operator, asked to be connected to the local police and my keys were in my hands within 30 seconds...

Needless to say, I left, never to step foot in their showroom again...

OK, reasonable deal, so I dig deeper into the website:

Pay Cash - $22,921

Wow. $6,021 more. I understand taxes, registration, etc. But here's their breakdown:

Registration & Fees include $492.40 DMV fee , $999.00 documentation fee , $349.95 electronic filing fee and $2,863.00 Jenkins Value Package. Total $4704? That's not $6,021 for starters.

So I get the first three, although that documentation fee seems high. But the "Jenkins Value Package"? So I call, and I'm given the explanation of "Well, other dealers just call it mark up, but we give you something for it" Ok, like what?

"Floor mats, pinstriping, and a 130 point inspection" My response: "So you weren't inspecting your used cars before? You just took them on trade-in, and put them on the lot? I might as well buy from a private party and take my chances, at least I'll save money for the repairs". Mumble, Mumble. I say thank you and hang up.

Look, I get it. Cars are in short supply, so prices are elevated. No issue with that. What the market will bear, right?

But to advertise a price that is $4180 (value package plus the extra markup before taxes and fees) less that what you actually want to sell it for is dishonest. If your start price you want is $21,080, advertise it upfront that way. Then I can decide if I want to come out and look at it, with the knowledge that is what you want, and I'm probably going to have to pay that price if I want it.

Jenkins, the market will change at some point to more like what it was. But my memory won't change.

Here's the link to the vehicle in you want to confirm my numbers, for as long as the post is active.

Pre-Owned Buick Encore for sale in Leesburg

Hanging onto the old one a bit longer, and looking on TOTV for my next one from a private party.
The problem is you villagers (not Me!) Keeep falling for their shizit!! Walk away and then come back and read the ignorant bovine dung you posted! 👎🏿👎🏿

We compute our OTD offer at home. Then we go to a dealer and tell them what it is. If they do not quickly accept our offer, we leave.

We did that at Phillips Toyota three years. I told them our OTD offer, I did not hear the word Yes, so we got up to leave. Then they accepted our offer, so we wrote them a check and drove home in a new RAV4.

When we bought a Honda in Fairfax Virginia, we left the dealer, got in our car, started to drive home, and the salesman came outside to tell us they would accept our offer.

Each dealer is different but they play the same enjoyable game.

I'm quite amused by the "dealer fee" that they like to tuck away with the tax and DMV numbers in hopes one doesn't pay attention to it. It seems to be a Florida thing to try to hide this $500 to $1000 piece of profit below the radar. I haven't seen such a thing when buying cars up north.

Car Stealerships are about the same as Norton/Amazon/Microsoft scammers.

We saw the "dealer fee" every time we bought a car in Fairfax Virginia.

One time we paid it. We made an OTD offer that, of course, included sales tax. On the final bill of sale, they had greatly discounted the price of the car and added a 'dealer fee' so they could pay less sales tax to the government.

We didn't care because all we cared about was the OTD price.

Once in a blue moon they will offer a price that might be lower than your OTD offer.

To me better to let them make the first move than tell them what you will accept. Stranger things have happened so nothing to lose.

Once I'm done test driving new cars I leave the dealership. From the comfort of my home I negotiate over the phone with several dealers and ask them to Email the purchase contract.

Easy Peasy, no stress.

This is a horrible time to buy a car. Just a year or two for things to settle down.

Often today's cars have oil filters in odd places. It is probable that oil from the old filter spilled on top of a suspension component or skid plate or other obstruction.
It is now harmlessly dripping down to your floor.

Sloppy work, but not a big deal.
