That might get you a few extra miles but as a long-range solution it is a losing proposition.

Take my generator (Westinghouse iGen 2500 gasoline powered inverter generator) for example. Running it full-load means it burns a tank of gas (roughly a gallon) in 3-4 hours. But A 2500W generator adds roughly 4 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging (data supplied by Ms. AI), so that full generator tank is going to give you somewhere in the range of 20 miles of additional range.

Don't get me wrong. An extra 20 miles if you're (say) 18 miles from the nearest gas station could be very convenient; even in certain situations a life-saver, but as a routine fallback it just isn't workable.

TV is neither on nor near the coastline, so for the government to order Villagers to evacuate due to a hurricane is a very long shot. The subject here is how to prevent another hurricane Milton from hitting Florida and causing either long lines of cars waiting to get gas, or having many of out-of-gas (or dead battery EVs) vehicles waiting to be towed, or your sister-in-law's family being inconvenienced.

They weren’t topping off daily, unless they drove hundreds of miles a day, but they were getting a fill-up when they saw that a hurricane was in the news and could possibly affect the area soon. “Soon” being in a couple days or so — let me use, “in the area.”

Here’s what I’m advocating, which is just the opposite of what most people do. During the hurricane season, which is supposed to end November 1, whenever your gas tank goes below ¾ you get a fill-up but only when you see that a hurricane is NOT “in the area.” Now, if a hurricane is “in the area” do not go near a gas station — you are stuck with your ¾ of a tank for a week.

I believed you, or someone mentioned here, that it really wouldn't matter what Villagers do since if six million Floridians were evacuating (most of those were from around the Tampa Bay area where Milton made landfall) and had to drive near or through the Villages, a small town like ours won't have the gasoline in our stations to fill everyone up, even if the locals are staying home and watching the storm on their TV. There is some truth to that but it's not nothing and if all the towns near a government-designated evacuation route did it, I believe it would matter.
