They wear them not to prevent airborne disease but to protect the wearer from being splattered by blood and other potentially infectious materials that are spewed about in an ICU.

Remember the masks are to prevent you spreading your illness to others. Plastic shields are to protect the wearer against large material, not viruses.

This is a bit of an over simplification.. but essentially correct.

Sure, I am an "anti-vaxxer" that has driven a couple hours in Feb and March to get fully vaccinated.
FYI, I gave the "like" button because I thought the post was an attempt to be facetious, not because of any "preconceived notions." Some of us just enjoy the conversation, and do not pretend to know it all.

There are two kinds of anti-vaxxers. Those who refuse to take the shots themselves, and those that do not believe that vaccines are a necessary public health measure to protect others. You have clearly stated, if I recall your posts, that you are opposed to any vaccine mandates or passports or similar actions. Perhaps I have you confused with another poster. If so, I apologize, and I'll accept your assertion that you got the sarcasm of the original posting about the Spanish flu.

Judging by this posters previous vaccine related posts, sarcasm/humor was not intended.
The poster is anti-vaccine.

Read the "History of Vaccines" There were vaccines for the Spanish Flu. Experimental (hmm) as they were.

I would think communities over 55 would have higher hospitalization rates even if covid never existed.

Interesting, since there was no vaccine for Spanish Flu in 1918-1919. Being a current anti-vaxxer is one thing, being a revisionist history anti-vaxxer is quite another

I always suggest doing some research before posting a smarmy reply.

2nd part---correct, those who are sick with COVID should isolate

1st part---the usual paper masks do just about nothing to protect the wearer---that ship sailed about 1 1/2 years ago

Lets be honest, wearing other than an N-95
mask is just about as effective as putting on a knee high stocking while having sex and praying you wont get pregnant.....ANYONE WITH ANY MEDICAL TRAINING realizes that

Ummmm, not quite:

In the deadly Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918-19, investigators attempted to develop vaccines to prevent influenza, though they had not yet correctly identified the causative pathogen. A variety of killed whole cell bacterial vaccines were tested; these vaccines included Bacillus influenzae (now know as Haemophilus influenzae) and strains of pneumococcus, streptococcus, staphylococcus, and Moraxella catarrhalis bacteria. These vaccines would certainly not have prevented influenza infection--as we know now, the pandemic was caused by a new strain of the influenza A virus. Influenza viruses would not be isolated and identified until the 1930s, and the first commercial influenza vaccines were not licensed in the United States until the 1940s.

Well, sure, the idea of socks preventing pregnancy is funny; everyone knows standing up while engaged in sex prevents pregnancy.
