Wink Amarillo Model

Looking for input from anyone that owns an Amarillo model with the air handler in the laundry area.

We are looking to downsize to 1300-1500 sq feet and an Amarillo model seems to offer the footprint we would like with the exception of the air handler location. Husband is adamant that if the air handler is not in the garage he is not willing to consider the house.

I have seen some that are enclosed with bi-fold doors or even a closet-like enclosure but still in the laundry area.

Your comments please? Thank you.

When you say looking do you mean build new or buy used. I did a search on the VLS using your model as a filter and the couple that did show the HVAC in the pictures appeared to have a full size room door off the kitchen to the laundry-HVAC room.

I own an Amarillo and the air handler is in the laundry room. Yes, you can enclose the HVAC unit but I don't see the reason. PM me if you want to see the laundry room/house, as I'm considering selling in the Village of Duval.

We are enclosing our handler now. We decided to use louvered doors. There's not a lot of room to doors to open. Do we are having the doors insert into a channel at the top. Doyee can take the doors completely off when service is needed. We have to move an overhead light. Total cost with labor $825

Not sure why this is an issue to have the HVAC in the laundry room. When it is in the garage it is subjected to the outside environment. This outside environment of high humidity, high heat and bug, geckos etc. will shorten the life of the unit.
Our VERY quiet Trane HVAC with a sliding louvered door system to enclose it is perfect.

We have the Sunkist model which is nearly the same as the Amarillo...maybe a bit smaller. Our HVAC is in the laundryroom and not enclosed. NOT sure why your husband dislikes this feature! FL weather is different than up-north. Our garages get super hot when it's hot outside. Many use theirs for storage but it's not recommended. IF you find a house you both love but has the hvac inside---tell your husband it can always be moved later if it's a sore spot for him.

LOL, mine is in the garage (non Amarillo) and does just fine with no bugs and such as it’s behind two doors with seals (not really outside). It’s cool when I open it and I store some things in the designated storage area next to it where they stay cool.

I have an Amarillo with the air exchange off of the kitchen. I was concerned about the noise but it isn't a factor. You can also build a cabinet enclosing the unit. I have a louvered door that I put a solid piece on the top of the louvered door to minimize any noise. Keep in mind that I would think the A/C would work harder if it is in a hot garage.

A neighbor moved theirs to the garage. Don't know how much it cost, but it was a huge improvement.

We have an Amarillo with the HVAC in the area between the kitchen and garage. We simply close the door to that area and it cuts off any noise. No other doors are required.
The key, however, is that our large return air grate is high in the living room, away from the HVAC noise. We had a friend who had a similar model but the large return air grate was right in the wall next to the HVAC (facing the kitchen). That let the noise into the living unit and they had to close their adjacent bedroom door at night for peace and quiet

Another thing to consider: We moved the washer and dryer from that area to the garage. That gave us the space to buy a couple of large cabinets (creating a pantry) from IKEA that fit perfectly. However, as a couple of people have mentioned, the garage is going to be humid and this can cause problems. Our washer, which is a fairly low end GE model, has been subject to some rust on the lid which we've been able to touch up from time to time. You can imagine what it will do to an HVAC unit out there. Dealing with the minor washer rust problem is worth it to us because the addition of the pantry cabinets is great.

If you'd like to see our unit, give me a call: 414-322-7632

We moved ours to the garage. Great move! It was noisy in the house and took up too much space. We added a deep sink with cabinet below, a clothes folding area and clothes hanging bar. I know others added cabinetry.

When we replaced system moved it to garage from laundry room. Added a lot. Ore space for a pantry and counter top. Have not had any issues with unit in garage.
System can be enclosed in laundry room with no issues.

Hi,
Having an AC in the garage has one major drawback, it sweats and can increase your AC bill because the garage is super hot.
We prefer the AC in the house and we are Florida residents for 57 years.

I agree that I don't like the look in the laundry room and it takes up space where you could build a pantry. But, the AC is often best off in the house when possible.

Only our experience.

I'm on my 5th home in Florida. Always had the Air Handler in the garage.

I have an Amarillo in TV and the unit was moved to the garage, same as the unit across the street from me.

1 bit of advice. Don't put it in the "middle" of the garage wall, offset it. Mine is in the middle and that effects both parking spaces .... off set it, like the people across the street. There's only effects one parking spot.

In my opinion, the comments about it being "hot in the garage" are ridiculous. I doubt you'll find a person in TV who's moved there's to the garage and now regrets it.
