Default Another Restaurant Conundrum

What would you do...if you witnessed an act performed by a restaurant employee that you thought was dishonest? You are aware that if you are mistaken, an innocent person could lose his/her job.

I'd confront the employee. Give them a chance to explain or make it right. As you said, the employee might be totally innocent.

Unless you are 100% sure, do nothing. You confront them and if they are already dishonest, they will lie about it and then you have doubt, if you tell management and you are wrong, an innocent person gets fired. So based on the way you worded your post, you have a reasonable doubt. So do nothing. Maybe watch closer next time until you are 100% sure.

Could you explain the type of act a little bit more. If it concerned money or property I would be much more concerned.

Was not in a position to do that, or I might have.

That is my gut instinct, as well.

It appeared to be a quid pro quo between an employee and a customer in which the employee got something and the customer got something, at the expense of the establishment. That's what I thought I saw, however the exchange was so subtle I doubt anyone else noticed.

Never mind, I got it. What bothers me is that more than one eating establishment has gone under because of employee theft. That said, I do believe that if I saw this, a good restaurant manager is bound to, at some point, notice it as well. Maybe a fellow employee will narc him/her out. It's just a matter of time.

Yes, if you noticed it, I'm sure others have.

They'll get caught. A good manager also has gut instincts about these things. Most restaurants have a lot more theft go out the back door than in the front of the shop.
