Default Why are they mean?

If Russ is talking about mean people in the hospital where he works, maybe it's because when people hurt or don't feel good it makes them mean. It may not be their nature but not feeling well or being in pain can bring the worst out in us humans. Otherwise, some people are just mean spirited.... I live near one.

Most of us wouldn't want to be around sick people all the time. I think nurses are angels ... overworked and underpaid.

my mother who was a nurse said she liked taking care of people when they are sick....she said it's when they starting getting better their true personalities came out....though today they don't keep you in the hospital long enough to start feeling better....

OMG are you having another dustup with your neighbor about his landscaping? What villages are you in? Being in a dysfunctional neighborhood must be difficult. Good luck, Mango

They must hurt, and want others to hurt as well. Being happy or sad...or being mean or kind is a decision that one makes when they open their eyes in the morning. One may not have control over how they are feeling physically, but in most cases they can control their attitude and mood for the day. Very often however, the "meanness" comes out after a few drinks. Most are probably good people, just needing others.
I am sometimes amazed at the Cavalier attitude some people on this forum have and put on the permanent cyber space. But as someone wiser than I once said, "Opinions are like A**holes, everybody has one. I try yo ignore it.

Angry

My lovely daughter-in-law just quit a job due to a toxic boss.
Her resignation letter stated "due to this hostile and unprofessional workplace.....".

She made her cry on numerous occasions!
When I heard that I told her I was flying up and SOMEONE would
Be crying but wouldn't be my D-I-L!

This may sound dumb to some but before responding I would like to know under what circumstances such mean spirited exchange took place where? why? What was said? body language?

When I was a kid and my parents grounded me I believed they were mean spirited. When Simon Cowell told contestants on American Idol what he thought some people believed he was mean spirited. Joe Pesi's un-mistakenly was often portrayed as a mean spirited gangster.
I believe Alex Baldwin is mean spirited as well as Kanye West .
I'm nice

I've quit some jobs too because of toxic bosses. A nurse once taught me that you teach people how to treat you. If you allow people to abuse you, many will try. Sometimes one just has to say, "No, I won't permit that." And sometimes that means leaving a job in which the boss is abusive, especially if the bosses above him/her tolerate it. I'm convinced a better job awaits your daughter-in law.

I don't think Russ would talk about anyone from work, patient or otherwise. I'd think he's probably referring to a mean spirited post on TOTV! I read one a couple of days ago that is still grating on my lst nerve! Even my golf game yesterday didn't help!

Might be a wasted trip as not many employers if any will be willing to discuss a matter like this with a mother-in-law and even if they are willing it is likely illegal due to privacy rules.

Doesn't look to good if an employee needs others to intervene on their behalf. Can't just run away from situations like this and there was no reason to be in such a hurry to leave. Crying by an employee doesn't necessarily mean anyone else did something wrong as some cry at the drop of a hat. It would have been better for her to have requested a meeting with personnel or a higher level manager to discuss the problem and then decided if leaving was the only alternative. Even then if it truly is a hostile environment and it has been properly documented there is recourse in the courts. Document, document, document, is the only way to have a case that will ever hold water.
