Default Negative posting

It seems lately there have been quite a number of negative posts. While people will always have differing opinions and sources of information, I think (IMHO) there has been a certain amount of intolerance and confrontational posts. I can't imagine meeting any one of you and not liking something about each of you. To disagree about something in a post is one thing, but to have an argument is quite another. We have all worked long and hard to purchase our homes in TV and enjoy our retirement. One of the very best things about owning in TV is the fact that every person is on equal footing. The amenities apply to one and all, no matter our backgrounds, or where we hail from, or what we did before we got there. As TV grows there will be more people with more ideas and different ways of living. But in retirement we all strive to be happy and enjoy life, and isn't that the whole point? The forum is a wonderful way for us newbies to garner information and learn about what goes on in TV. I am so happy to have "met" some of you through your posts and truly hope to meet you all in person at some point. I probably am getting myself in trouble for this post, but I sure hope not! I am the consummate positive thinker and feel pretty lucky for my good fortune to be able to live (shortly) in The Villages! And to have you all as neighbors! Nuff said

Hotrodgirl, this is my first post and you have hit the nail on the head! I have read a lot of them and have had my jaw drop at some of the negative posts, from landscaping to pool music. You have stated it very well. I live in the new section below 466a, and after reading some of these negative posts I am almost wishing I lived somewhere else. One thing I know for sure is that I will NEVER post anything that can be taken out of context. You are so right that we have all worked hard to be where we are and we should all be considerate of each other, no matter what the issue is....most of us have had to put up with a lot of BS in our jobs and we shouldn't have to put up with it in retirement. So if someone posts a comment you don't agree with don't nail them to the cross, look at it from their perspective and just be considerate of each other. Ok, I didn't mean to go on, but that's what happens after a glass of wine

Well stated. However there are negative posts and there are differing opinions that are stated with respect. Aside from the political forum which embraces confrontation, people should be respectful of others opinions and state their differing opinion without malice. The problem with the internet is that everyone with a keyboard and modem can write anything as an "expert", whether they know anything or not. Another problem is you can't easily express nuance, or sarcasm, or humor without someone totally misunderstanding your intent. Best way to handle it is to not take it personally or seriously, and enjoy the good information you get and ignore the rest.

Well said. 99% of the people posting are really nice and helpful. It's that 1% that makes it bad. But if you notice, it's usually the same few names. If it is really offensive, just hit the small red triangle in the upper right hand corner of the post-- this lets the moderator/ administrator take a look at it. Let them take it from there. That being said, I have only been on the site for a few months but I have learned SO MUCH about The Villages and where to find so much useful info. This site is wonderful, don't let those few negative people get to you.

You wino! What do you mean you almost wish you lived somewhere else, in that case why don't you leave? NEVER post anything out of context......well aren't you just perfect! BS???? that is a thinly disguised substitute for a disgusting profanity...........................Just kidding - see, it is easy to take things out of context, but don't fear TOTV, it is a GREAT resource for all things to do with The Villages, and a LOT tamer and more friendly than almost any other forum I have ever participated in.

Nice post, hotrodgirl. I, too, have had the exact same thoughts and wondered why some feel the need to be down right cruel. Thank you.

eweissenbach: Feigning disgust as most psych majors know is a subdued attempt at masking how you really feel about a person place or thing Fess up you were upset and disgusted about what that poster said and you really want her to leave TV.......You mean like that

I haven't had a glass of wine----not yet. I just posted some comments on another thread regarding this subject and I hope not to repeat myself too much in case some read it.

We live in a negative world today. This year and especially in the next 4 months we are going to be bombarded with one negative commercial after another. Its election year! I'm already sick of these commercials. Its done because the "experts" say it works. People today believe half truths and "spin" that makes absolutely no sense. I am going to use some Southern Illinois hill country common sense and tell you that I believe this has an unconscious effect on all of us. No, I don't have a degree in psychology (only a minor in college many moons ago) but I don't think you need any degree at all to express a common sense observation on TOTV. Folks, I don't give up easily. I plan to "hang" and try my best to be positive and optimistic about TV and The United States of America. Time for that glass of wine. And right now, that's all I've got to say about that!

I figure that the people that post negative or confrontational posts would be miserable if they didn't have something to complain about

As I said earlier, sarcasm or irony is a very dangerous thing on a message board - very easily misunderstood. For those who think I am a hater - I AM BEING FACETIOUS. I really like Rubi, and don't want him to move or leave TOTV................just take a long vacation! KIDDING!

I would respond to that question except not on this thread.
