There have been two [or more] postings claiming that pedophilia is not treatable. That is wrong. There is a large body of literature on the treatment of pedophilia. Use Google Scholar and search for treatment of pedophilia and get updated.
This is a good first link.

There is an individual in my Village that has been accused of being on a file sharing site where he allegedly downloaded child porn.
I guess he attempted suicide after his arrest and failed. I suppose he tried to hang himself and now wears one of those neck cages. My guess is this guy probably never committed a crime in his life, held a good job and never molested a child. Im sort of ambivalent about arrests for watching child pornography. I agree that it is highly inappropriate and downright sickening but what real crime is he commtting? Watching a sick video? Its quite likely he never did and never would touch a child. He probably gets his sick jollies just watching it. If convicted, he may go away for many years. I guess I find it odd that he can be sent to a prison never having hurt anyone and just watching a video. |

If a pedophile moves here isn’t it a possible sign he/she is trying to keep themselves away from temptations? It would certainly concern me if I knew my neighbor was a convicted pedophile and likely affect how much contact I would have. But the same would be true if they had been convicted of murder, drug trafficking, armed robbery, other types of child abuse, etc. But I believe that people are capable of change and deserve that chance. For me, I think I would rather not know any of that about my neighbors so I can build my own experience with them based on who they are here and now. But if they find my body buried in my neighbors backyard one day, I reserve the right to change my mind!

I think that a person's sexual orientation is innate, almost all of the time. A genetic thing. I think I remember you disagreed with that.

So...why? According to Umansky Law Firm: "While existing Florida law already restricted sexual offenders from living within 1,000 feet of parks, schools and other child-friendly places, various local ordinances set additional limitations, referred to as “no-go zones,” to further exclude this group of individuals from certain areas."
So can they even shop in places near schools and parks? I think the answer is no. Do they have a lot of trouble, vandalism, violence directed at them if there are kids in the neighborhood where they live? Its often the case. Also, they have to sell their house/move if a new school or park opens. There is an entire town down near the Everglades where sex offenders live. There is a tacit agreement not to put schools/churches/parks etc. near this town. For the most part, I do not sympathize with convicted sex offenders since their "suffering" is so much less than that of their victims. Admittedly, there are a few who are people who got too friendly at, for example, age 19 with a 17 year old girlfriend/boyfriend. I've seen documentaries on this. At any rate, TV is adult - not much chance of breaking the laws on proximity. I checked when I moved here and there is a sex offender on the next block. I think I know who. He keeps to himself. I think its not my business as long as he keeps to himself. However, I do think any grandparent whose grandkids will visit needs to google up the sex offender map. Otherwise I think we will be OK. We can't put them all in the Everglades. |

Absolutely! It wouldn’t exist if bad guys weren’t making $ from it and the children wouldn’t be hurt in the creating of it. How could anyone want to look at it? Despicable and depraved. |

That was the original premise of banning child pornography. It seems that is no longer the case. Most child porn is shared, not sold, on the internet.

I don't recall having ever suggested that orientation was not innate. There are likely genetic, epigenetic, and both intra and extra uterine environmental factors in play. |

I assume your intent was NOT to draw some sort of moral (or immoral) equivalency between these 2 demographics. Though I'm sure there are some out there that would do so if there was a chance it could further an agenda. For me, being on a published list of legal gun owners wouldn't scare me anywhere near as much as being on a published list of non-owners. How are those gun-free zone signs working out so far?

Stop and think - why is this one crime singled out ? Why isn't there a drug dealers registry ? A Felons registry? An arsonist list ? Animal abuser List ? Murderers List ?
A lot of hidden money behind the Sex Offender Registry. It has made millions for some people and some companies. Interesting fact. |

Just had a pedophile move into the neighborhood. Don’t know what to make of it. Fortunately there are no kids in the neighborhood. But, if he wants to buy one of my golf carts I’m cool with that.
