It's hard to find fault with Joaniesmom's approach. It's polite and non-confrontational. It might or might not work, but nothing is lost by trying and indeed it enables the offender to cooperate without losing face or feeling diminished.

People often go with a friend or have meet ups. While I agree that blasting music is a disruption for many, that is an issue onto itself, you have to expect that people will be talking and maybe even get a little loud at the pool as they have groups gathering, or are having a good time. You cannot expect to have a totaly quiet isolative experience when you go to a public pool. The only place you can expect to have exactly the ambience and behavior that you want is inside your own home and in your own backyard. The rest is up for grabs. You cannot control, dictate or put your own expectations on others talking or having a good time while you want quiet and peacefulness for yourself in a public pool, park or other setting. There should be respect of course, but it is a recreational experience, it is a pool. it is a gathering place, it is for everyone.
Good point, Jane. Respecting a public space is a two way street.

I live by Live Oaks Park, I have heard people from the park in my backyard talking and laughing, I love it. Life is all around me, how lucky I am to hear happy people living and enjoying their lives.
Agree 100%

Besides, if you want to read in a quiet environment, you should stay home or go to the library. The pools in TV are for socializing and having fun.

Just my 2 cents...

I go to that pool, and the music is not very loud and is clearly enjoyed by the people in the pool. Many are water dancing to the music! It is a very friendly pool and there is talk and chatter as well. Everyone is welcomed in a friendly way. Personally, I love the music that is played.
If you want a quiet place to read a book, you might want to try your lanai, or some other place, but most people at that pool love the people and the music.
The music player is very nice and would most likely try to please a request for quiet, but you cannot expect a well attended pool to be very "quiet."

In the situation I described, playing the ghetto blaster loudly at an adult pool all day long, it is obviously an established routine. It happens every day and people who frequent that pool must be OK with it, or at least accept it.

Therefore it is up to me to find another quiet pool to enjoy. In no way would I ever get into confrontation mode and play music louder or ask them to turn off their music. There are enough adult pools that everyone can find one they enjoy. At our adult pool, people do laugh and play music and have fun, but it isn't obnoxious or annoying at all.

Live and let live.

I so agree. All these horror stories are exaxtly why we bought a house with a pool. It's small and quiet.

If I do not like their music am I allowed to play mine at the same level?
If not, why not?

You could probably play your music at the same level. But why would you want to subject yourself to the stress and unpleasant feelings? If you go to another quiet adult pool, everyone wins.

You make perfect sense to me. If all the world were like you, we would have no wars. This is where we need Gary Morse to come to the pool and say, "Turn that damned thing down!"

You hear that Gary? I keep standing up for you. This is important stuff here.

Let me say again--the music is not loud at all! The people talking and laughing in the water are louder than the music. While I was there, a woman sat reading a book on the other side of the pool and seemed to have no problem. Some people in the water made comments about the great music and asked if it could be turned up so they could hear it better, but it was not even then turned up!
I am amazed that a person moves to The Villages, and after unpacking, goes to a public pool and wants it quiet so she can read! Some people need a silent environment to read and others can read with background noise. That is just the way people are different. I need silence to read, and therefore rarely try to read at the pool. I can read at home just fine! To move into a planned large scale community and expect others who were there first to accommodate to your specific needs for a reading environment is evidence of not having adapted to your new environment yet. Stay home and read, or come to the pool and make some wonderful new friends! The music is just like that on the Villages radio station, which is playing at many local places, also. This is a great place! Stop whining!

To give you hope, I've been going to the pools for some time now and have NEVER had that happen. So hang in there, maybe try another pool for awhile until those rude people just go away. Most everyone is very thoughtful of others and wouldn't dream of doing such a thing. Oh, and welcome!

The pool is just for them. Just ask them, they will tell you.

Some people are just rude and don't play well with others. I probably would have gone to another pool like barefoot suggested.

I don't think it a serious problem in the whole scheme of things. Just a preference for different styles of relaxing. Fortunately, we are blessed to have many, many, many pools available to us. We're entitled to use them all. So it's just a matter of visiting a few pools to find one that is a good fit for your unique requirements.
