Many, (and I mean many) years ago living with my parents, they had a plumber come to the house and replace some washers/seals in leaking faucets.
To lube the seals and threads the plumber used Vaseline. Wouldn't Vaseline deteriorate those seals over time? Anyone know? I been using Vaseline on the threads on my garden hose. Here's one place from goggle not to use Vaseline: Do not use petroleum jelly with condoms—it can break down the condom so it gets holes in it. ![]() Cheers! I believe you Google'd your own answer. Do we know more than Mr Google? Maybe. Probably not.
It's called Vaseline Petroleum jelly: From the top answer on Sir Google's place: Vaseline or other petroleum products should never be used on rubber or neoprene objects. It can deteriorate the rubber or neoprene very rapidly. Sounds like pretty definitive answer to your question. ![]()

What Is Plumber’s Grease?
So, what the heck is plumber’s grease, anyway? Plumber’s grease is a waterproof product made of silicon oil and grease. It looks and feels like Vaseline, but don’t be fooled. Plumber’s silicone grease is much more durable than Vaseline. It’s thick, food-grade, waterproof, and will last a long time. |

Silicone grease is plumbers grease. It looks like vaseline.
Vaseline destroys natural rubber. |

Most faucets made in the past 20 years or so do not have flexible washers as the water seal when you turn off the faucet. It is metal-to-metal contact, with no washer. So, you shouldn't need to worry about leaking faucets nearly as much. The only rubber components are the o-rings in the faucet cartridge which rarely cause leaks. When it does leak, you just replace the entire cartridge.

silicone grease is the only acceptable lube on the washers although many people swear by different things.
