Default Renters and Golf Carts

I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I have something to add.
We are negotiating renting our home for the first time and of course the golf cart issue has come us. We called our agent, Sharon Frizell, at Thomas Insurance Services (352 326-8021) to discuss this issue.

Our golf cart is insured through Progressive and she advised that is the one company that allows for renters to use carts as long as there is no additional charge in the rental for the golf cart. I told her I would include the language of the golf cart being made available to the renters at no additional charge and she agreed that would be fine. Now I know you are all rolling your eyes and alarms are going off - GET SOMETHING IN WRITING. Well she provided me with the form Progressive requires to add tenants to your golf cart policy. So it can be done if you are insured with a company that provided that service.

Hope some of you find this information valuable.

That's been said here before, but nobody has shown Allstate puts it in writing as Progressive does, as described by the o.p. here. It's always been described as "call a certain agent at a certain agency, and they'll tell you it's okay".

Even WITH it in writing, the lawyers would have a field day with the owner if there's an accidental death, injury, maiming or paralyzed victim from a renter driving a cart provided in the rental home.

Just be sure. Remember, it is all of your life's earnings that can ride on the decision.

To lose everything you have worked for your whole life because you rented a motor vehicle to a total stranger. Wow! This just blows my mind that people would take that risk.?????????

Then why not let renters arrange renting their own golf carts? We rented one on our own while visiting friends last year. Now we are coming for our lifestyle visit next month even though we are not retiring until 2015, but if we find "the" house we may buy and have thought about renting it out so all this info is helpful.

Whether or not your renters are covered under your policy, you need to remember you'll be held liable for any injuries or damages they cause while using your cart under Florida's "dangerous instrumentality" doctrine. So it's still a case of renter beware and not worth the risk of giving a cart to some unknown renters who may or may not be careful drivers with your cart.

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law decided that this was the year that they jump in with both feet and bought a villa with the purpose of renting it to defray expenses before they retire.

They had no problem renting it from mid-November to mid-May to 4 different renters. Some inquiries asked if a golf cart was included and they said no. Those inquiries went elsewhere to rent. They are booked solid during the peak "in-season" months.

We had many discussions whether to include a cart in the rental or not, and to risk all that you have worked a lifetime for, was not worth a lost rental. They left a sheet with information on all the businesses that provide rental carts.

If you have a home that you are considering to rent for whatever reason and you have a golf cart, I would suggest to take it off-site. Rent a spot in a storage facility, or park it at a friend or neighbor's garage, but don't include it in the rental at all, regardless what documentation you get from the insurance carrier on your home.

It seems like half of the commercials on television are from lawyers looking to recover damages. Can't really blame them, after all, they have to eat too !!

Just throwing in my 2 cents. That and another $2.98 may buy you a cup of coffee

We have made our decision based on what we believe to be correct - we are not renting our cart we are allowing our renters to use it - just as we allow our neighbor's to use it when they have company. We have insurance and have it to protect ourselves against the unknown.
