Default Snakes at TV

We are moving to The Villages when our house sells. I was reading about seeing alligators and snakes came up.

Is there a problem with snakes? Have they ever got into a house? Do you see them a lot?

Thanks
Bill

Have only seen 1 so far...a black racer. Had those in abundance down in SWFL and as mentioned above, they will usually just scoot when they see you. Only had one that ever kept coming back to bother me, and it was probably a Momma with a nest, I'm told. I stopped weeding after the 3rd scoot and return, figuring something was up, and just left it be.

I have a couple of black racers that appear in my yard frequently. One is around 3 feet long and one is about 5 feet long. Beautiful snakes and harmless.

There are quite a few pygmy rattlesnakes that are found in the high grass areas of the golf courses. Just do not hit your ball into those protected areas and do not go into them and you should have no problem with the rattlesnakes.

I have heard of a few snakes getting into garages when people leave the door raised to keep the garage cooler. Don't do that. I have heard of some people getting a snake on their lanai but it can be shooed out with no problem.

Do not kill snakes! They keep down the mice and rats that sometimes come up from the field areas.

I've been here since January and have not seen any snakes. I did see one alligator but that was it.

there are no doubt snakes where you currently live....when was the last time you saw one?

Ditto for TV.....they are here, like every where else....you will rarely if ever see one....just like every where else.

Thanks for bringing this subject up. And thanks to all that answered. I didn't even stop to think about the rattlers. My pug loves to stop for his breaks in the tall grasses. Sheesh....and i put the little plastic bag on and pick up after him. Time for a retraining for both of us!

So far I have NOT seen a snake in my yard or in the neighbor's yards. I do know that they may be around though. I have lived here 7 1/2 years. I do not live close to any water or golf courses or nature areas. They are several blocks away.

I heard of a neighbor cutting pompass grass and pulled out a snake. I sure got rid of my pompass grass after that as it was a pain in the butt and by the electric box so had to be trimmed etc.

I heard of a hawk carrying a snake and dropped it into the Sabal Chase pool. It was dead. The hawk lost its grip. That was in the paper several yrs ago.

The best one - it is funny - is a couple we know. He awoke one morning to go biking and kept the lights off to not disturb his wife. Went out into the garage and put his helmet on and something was not right. He went into the bathroom to look. Apparently a snake had curled up in his bike helmet and parts of it were hanging out from the helmet that was now on his head. LOL! BUT glad it didn't happen to me, but I don't bike either. So in the dark garage, turn those lights on!

Just be aware they are out there.

We have a black racer snake that lives around here. I've seen him about five or six times in the 18 months we have lived here. I saw one slithering down the middle of the road a few weeks ago and I've seen a few dead ones in the road, but most people don't see them very often.

If you buy an electric golf cart you will likely need to leave the garage door open a few inches when charging it. That's when anything like snakes, mice or rats can enter your home. It might not happen very often but it can happen.

We used to have a black snake that lived in our area. One day I went out to go to golf and I heard this tremendous racket - like someone was tearing down a bird cage. I looked between the houses and did not see anything. I took a walk down to where my A/C compressor is and there was the remains of a black snake that had got caught in the fan and was being slammed around the compressor box. I had to shut the A/C unit off and go out and scrape the snake off of the compressor blades so I could turn it back on. I also called Sun Kool to come out and make sure nothing was damaged by the snake and to get the remains of the snake out of the compressor box before he starting smelling too bad. I also had to call my house cleaning person to get the snake remains off of my house and the neighbor's house.

It was not a pretty sight.

I have seen one snake in the bottom of a drainage box at a golf course. They said it was a baby water moccasin. Don't know. I am extremely afraid of snakes and yet I feel very safe here. I have seen some alligators on the golf course. I hit my ball right over by one and I decided to let it have the ball. Even though it was my favorite color, pink balls are a dime a dozen. Well maybe fifty cents.

I regularly catch small snakes on sticker boards, that I have around garage. They sneak in at the drainage holes by garage door, and when I have the door open. Last year, I found a snake coiled around the propane tank, when I opened BBQ to turn on propane. That was a little scary. The advice to stay away from protected areas and high grass areas by water on golf course, is very good advice. (If you do, bring a club with you in case)

One suggestion is not to have bird feeders around as the seed attracts all kinds of vermin including snakes.

The last snake I have seen was outside of Tucson, AZ. We were hunting a ghost town called 4th of July. That was 1979.

I have lived in Ft. Wayne, IN. 30 years and never saw one here.

Thanks for all the replies.
