Default Pizza Delivery / Takeout

I see national chains coming out and indicating they never touch the pizza.

Wish the local pizza joints did that, I have a craving.

Papa John's. They claim that they don't touch it after it comes out of a 450 degree oven.

Ordered from them last week because of their ads. What they don’t tell you is that if you pay by credit card, they put a slip and pen on top of the box and require a signature. If we order again, I’ll make sure I have my own pen ready.

Most likely they do touch the box. I formerly owned a busy pizza establishment which did a fair amount of deliveries to the local college. Most of these large franchise pizza places use a rolling wheel pizza cutter once the pizza is in the box. Then the box is closed, then kept warm until pick up or delivery. I imagine its still as safe today as it was 35 years ago. Now the cardboard box is another story. I suggest keeping your gloves on once your pick-up or delivery is done, open the box while still gloved up, then use a spatula to remove your pizza pie then take the now empty box to the garage. Wash your hands and enjoy the pizza. If your a bit reluctant try putting the pizza on cookie sheets in your oven for a few minutes. Try ordering ahead of your desired time then simply reheat when wanted. Remain safe.

Can't get it to you if they don't touch it. Just have your sanitizer, spray the box and wipe it down. (As we do with Publix food deliveries.) Then wash your hands, open the box and enjoy.

Yes, Pappa John's does cut the slices. Hubby and I tried Sam's Club pizza that you have to cook and that is not sliced.

Tugging this thread sideways a bit, I tried frozen supermarket pizza for the first time earlier this year and it's actually decent. On par with franchise joints, imo. The pies can be kind of stingy with toppings but that's easily rectified. I like Freschetta brand self rising crust.

Since manufacturing is automated it might pose slightly less of a risk than locally made products. Even being frozen, the box should probably be sanitized the same way as other products being brought into the house.

Of course they touch the box. You must assume there is virus on the outside of the box, maybe even the inside of the box. This is what I do........

Place the box on the dedicated part of the kitchen counter for all groceries and take out food. (to be sanitized after all groceries and take out food is removed)

Open the box.

WASH MY HANDS.

Remove the pizza and place it on a tray to be heated in the oven. (it is never hot enough by the time we get it home and I want to heat up the food more to kill any potential virus).

Pick up the box and carefully place it in a clear plastic bag (with the help of my husband who keeps the bag open for me).

Place the box in the plastic bag on the floor of the garage where it will sit for over 24 hours.

WASH MY HANDS.

SANITIZE the surface the box sat on while I removed the pizza from the box.

Enjoy piping hot pizza when it comes out of the oven.

Reading other posts......why bother sanitizing a pizza box you are only going to throw away? That is a waste of precious sanitizer. I do sanitize boxes before they go into my pantry such as cracker boxes. Actually, I sanitize every single item that comes out of my grocery bags. I have my sanitizing station on my kitchen counter. One side of my island is for the items to be sanitized and the other end of the island is for the items that have been sanitized. I saw that process in a video. Even Dr. Gupta from CNN does it this way in his kitchen.

I'm more concerned about someone sneezing or coughing while placing it inside the box.

That is the reason for heating food from take out or delivery. I've heard the experts say at this time, it is best not to order cold food such as a sandwich. Order hot food and either heat it in the oven or heat it in the microwave for at least 30 seconds.
