Ah, must be in the eyes of the beholder - she was twerking? I thought she had bedbugs or something and was just scratching. How could you tell in that outfit? I was on the phone the whole time so maybe I missed something.

Pulled the cover off the pool and swam a half mile equivalent on the super swim pro and still had time for a quick shower and a beer before the second half started. Wasn’t going to waste a second of my time watching that garbage. Good game though.

We watched the SB on DVR, about a 15 min buffer. Watched up to halftime and about 2 min of her performance. Not for us so fast forwarded up to live. Perfect as she was just about done.

Then back to the SB avoiding in our opinion, too flashy, too any special effects, dumb dancing, and lip synch.

I guess my hope for Benny Goodman orchestra or Pat Boone or guy Lombardo is out of the question for next year’s SB…

1. Yes, she was twerking. She kinda made that move famous a few years ago. It's an extension of the Mapouka dance, a modern dance of the Ivory Coast in West Africa from the 1990's.
2. You can't understand her because she's Barbadian and has a very thick accent.
3. The largest generation demographic of NFL fans aren't old enough to have one foot in their grave yet. This is their dance music. Just like I never understood the point of the Watusi, you don't have to understand the point of twerking.
4. Yes, she's pregnant. It's amazing what pregnant women are capable of doing these days. Back when you were in your 30's, pregnant women stayed home, vacuumed the floors, had their husband do all the heavy lifting, had the milk man deliver the gallon of milk, didn't buy pampers because they were washing cloth diapers themselves, and their husbands actually earned enough money that the wives didn't have to work to support the family. And so they weren't allowed to. They also weren't allowed to have a credit card in their own name. Dancing while pregnant was scandalous, and probably considered dangerous. Women also smoked and drank while pregnant because they weren't informed yet that both of those things were unhealthy to their unborn child.
5. Rhianna is also known for celebrating her sexuality. It's not particularly to my taste but I don't fault her for sharing her enthusiasm.
6. She was fully dressed from chin to toes, and those white outfits are hip-hop outfits. Considering that Rhianna is a Barbadian hip-hop performer - it makes sense. I don't know how any of them were able to handle all that costuming, it was in the 70's yesterday. I would've been sweating bullets.
5. I'm not much of a Rhianna fan, but I do like a couple of her songs. They're great for exercising. And twerking. Which is actually fun, and I'll continue doing until I have to worry about breaking a hip in the process. By that time, some other music genre will show up on the charts and I'll whine that it's horrible and vulgar.

The entire performance was lip synced so the comment about the thick accent - not buying it. She definitely did not make "twerking" famous. That trashy move has been done for many years by many people.

I saw a headline online that Rihanna supposedly was not getting paid for her halftime performance. Not sure if it was true, but that show was awful.

The cheering(?) during her show sounded like canned cheers to me. There are not too many teenagers who can afford a SB ticket.

I've noticed Adele speaks with quite an accent, yet I have no trouble understanding her singing.

I'm not into her music, but was looking forward to the show/spectacle. However, other than the intro with the different hanging levels, it was just boring and crude. One of the worst SB halftime shows I remember.

Ditto here, as her music isn't on our 'must hear' list. To be honest though, music to me has been on a long/slow down-slide - since The Monkees broke up. LOL

Doing a modicum of research prior to the SB, I admit to being surprised at how popular she is, how long its been since she performed live (7 years) and besides being a talented singer/songwriter - she's also a savvy businesswoman (net worth est. $1.7Billion).

I can't also help but wonder, how many critics already had their minds made up and comments mentally prepared, once it was announced who was performing...and long before her actual half-time act?

Some of the Saturday Night Live musical quest appearances can also be risqué to rather vulgar/crude.

It is a trend. With some of those I also just fast forward as I usually tape those.

Some of Elvis' moves were also rather challenging for his fans' parents and grandparents. Super Bowl XXIII halftime show - Wikipedia

I watched a couple minutes of the show and found out it was as trashy tasteless as I thought it would be. Went on the internet and watched some videos until the game started again.

Excellent game though, one of the better Super Bowl games.

Frankly I had never heard of Rihanna before I did from a lady friend a week prior to SB. I was not told she was a Bajan. That fact came as a shock to me when I read it in this thread. I was in Barbados when President Reagan intervened when armed groups of Cubans were trying to take over Grenada. My wife and I had flown into Barbados one or two nights before it started. They had turned the lights on at the airport so our plane could land then turned them off. The next day US military cargo transports were flying into the airport all day long one after another. We drove out to the airport to see what was going on. Helicopters were being unloaded. The US main stream media was there. Some of them were relentlessly hassling an airman in the mens room at the airport while he was trying to do his business. He kept mum about what was going on. The MSM was obnoxiously rudely storming hotel lobbies for rooms. "We're the Press!" blah blah blah. In our small family owned hotel the owners were huddled together when we returned. Then they and just about every Bajan I ran into on the street, in restaurants and elsewhere asked me if I was an American. I replied yes. Then they profusely thanked me over and over as most had friends and family on Grenada and had been very concerned about Cubans taking the island over. Of course when I returned to the USA and read some of the press coverage I could not believe they had written about the conflict I was near. Anyway, I found Bajans to be very proper and polite people. Posters were up instructing beach goers to cover up when they went into grocery stores, not just go in their bathing suits. The British influence was strong. I realize that was 40 years ago, and things have changed. Yet I wonder if Rihanna truly represents the culture of Barbados today.

Thank you for explaining. You have certainly extended and updated my musical knowledge. I still don’t like that type of music but I love Barbados. They have a wonderful university in Bridgetown and the elementary school kids wear uniforms. Just a lovely culture.

Didn't mind the performance all that much but I do find it dishonest when a "performer" needs to lip synch their entire act. Are they not good enough to sing live? I guess this has been going on with most Super Bowl halftimes for years now. That great performance of Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner some years ago was lip synced too. Boo!

Apparently the days of The Who, Rolling Stones, and Paul McCarthy performing during halftime are long gone. And what happened to all those great Miller Light and Budweiser commercials? Thankfully there are DVR’s with a fast forward button so we can at least still watch some watered down football without all the garbage in between the snaps.
