Isn't that just the pits. I send in a check with the extension (oct 15). March and April I am doing everyone's taxes and never get around to mine. If I charged I
would make some pocket money. Last year there were so many at the library (in SRQ a group of us volunteer ) we remained three hours past schedule. People (Myself included) get so stressed out. When I was younger I would go to the P.O., get every return receipt imaginable. Computer filing has made it easier. In NYC there would be news cameras every year on the steps of the main Post Office filming people running to get their return stamped before midnight. Did you request a paper check or auto deposit for your tax refund?

Maybe they should pay penalties and interest for being late.

Isn't that amazing. I had my main office in Manhattan NYC. I lived in NYS about 30 miles North of the Lincoln Tunnel. I had warehouses in three states, including MJ, and trucking companies in NY and NJ. I got to pay (personal income tax not corporate)to Federal, NY city, NY State, AND NJ.

My husband is a tax preparer and advises to set up an account with IRS. Be ready to download a photo ID and take a selfie to match up with the ID. It’s a pain but there is too much fraud to take a chance. On the plus side, they will pay you 6% interest starting April 18. Good luck.

[QUOTE=Lea N;2243443]Go to irs.gov to find out the status of your refund. We never received a refund in 2021 and it was a substantial amount. I'm still trying to get the money. It's a long story but someone did our taxes and put the wrong address on our return. Instead of having the refund deposited into our account they selected to have it mailed to us (why I'll never know.) - at a wrong address. The person who did our taxes never let us see it or sign it. When I realized what they had done, a couple weeks or so after their mistake I asked them to correct it and they refused, saying it could not be done. I am at a loss as to how to get our money. I've filled out paperwork and nothing has happened.[/QUOTE

The preparer is not allowed to file a return electronically without your signature on Form 8879. The fact that they did file w/o yr signature is a alert. Do you have a copy of your return? If not get it if you can.

I agree that once the return is filed the method of changing whether the refund is direct deposited or mailed can't be changed.

There is a box on the return for the preparer to get their fee out of the refund. There could be a problem with this.

Go to IRS.gov, register and get a transcript of your account. Get this even if you have a copy to confirm what you have matches what was filed. The transcript will tell you if your refund was issued. If it was issued there is a form to send to get a replacement check which will be researched at the IRS. If it's just lost in the mail if will take 3-4 months to get a replacement. Either way the IRS will tell what they find.

If you want someone to look over your return (at no charge) to see if there were any shenigans send me a private message or call me at 561-968-8571 (I'm a CPA)

I am a dinosaur so I still file with pen and paper and mail it in. I filed in early March and got my refund in two weeks. I was amazed since the last couple of years it was summer before getting my refund.

I filed electronically in February, I owed the Feds a little & the state owed me a significantly larger amount. I paid the Feds right on time, but the state did not send me my refund until June (direct deposit). 4 months after I filed. This year was the longest I have ever waited for the refund. If you filed in April, you are approaching the 4 month mark I faced. If you would care to share more info that might be helpful. Are you talking about the Feds or a State? If a State, which one? When did you file? Did you file paper or electronically? Did you submit it yourself or did a tax preparer do it? Are you expecting a check in the mail or a direct deposit?

No, we have not. Filed on Feb. 11, IRS.gov. says they have it and it's "in process" and apparently nothing we can do but wait.

Default No Refund yet

We used Turbo Tax and still have not gotten a 2021 refund. We’ve called at least once a month for over a year. They repeatedly tell us 2 more weeks but never get it. Have been told there’s nothing we can do but wait.

I try to avoid penalties so try to leave some owed to me. Not as inclined going forward. Will apply to a future quarter as an option as one person mentioned.

If all of this is indeed a scam, identity theft is also a possibility, This is speculation without more information from you.

If you have no strong evidence of a scam and your refund is substantial, you might get professional help from a reputable tax preparer such as a CPA to possibly help guide you through the process.

Unless you have evidence of your tax preparer’s willful intent rather than a mistake, I am doubtful that you could get law enforcement very interested to investigate.

Stolen Tax Refund Check? Here’s How To Get Your Money Back
The company that did it is a well known non-profit nationwide organization. The person that did our taxes did them the year before with no problems. He said he does this for veterans, my husband is a veteran. I don't believe there was ill intent but they were sloppy, irresponsible and just didn't care.

Thank you for your advice about contacting a CPA. I called our CPA who did our taxes when different part of FL. He didn't want to be involved. H&R Block helped by guiding me to irs.gov. That is where I discovered that the check, along with our tax info was sent to our old address. It wasn't forwarded to us even though we had forwarded our mail. It's unbelievable. The tax preparer had time to fix it but refused. I changed our address with the IRS as soon as I realized the tax preparers mistake, hoping it would help but it didn't. I filled out paperwork for the IRS for a lost refund and there has been no response. I'll do it again in hopes of someone helping.

Thanks again for taking your time to offer advice. I appreciate it.

Default Waiting for our tax return yet Aug

Since February when we submitted our taxes and for our $10,000 return. in July we received a letter from IRS saying we have to go online or call to verify who we are tried going online, but all it was was getting all of our biometrics photos and a lot of other stuff to pick us out of a crowd. Tried the phone number They gave us on that letter for two weeks and finally connected today and after 45 minutes of online phone talking, she approved us to get our return by Christmas.
For years, we’ve been at the same address and used all of our same information. I don’t understand why our government is doing this to citizens.
