Rumor, BS or what: An employee of PUBLIX claims to have knowledge on the deal with TV.
My wife was informed today that this woman at the Colony Publix was at a meeting with TV to discuss the upcoming trash bags required by all village residents to use for it's recycling program. She also mentioned that Glad does not make the size type of clear bags that TV requires up till now. That with these new manufactured bags designed specifically for the villages and it's recycling program will earn TV .07 cents per bag. I believe it's per box, but with all the deals they have with every business in this community I could be wrong. One other thing my wife mentioned how people in line waiting to check out where outraged about this new, you must use this particular very expensive trash bag.

this is the way they did it in the north Atlanta burbs for yard trash (lawn clippings, tree branches, etc) and I thought it was costly but a fair way to cover those truck costs (and you sure learn to mulch fast LOL).
I don't see how they can enforce recycling this way though. |

There is absolutely no way that Clorox would produce a bag specifically designed to TV's specifications. They would likely not produce a special bag if it was used in the entire state of Florida. Likely there are hundreds of millions of trash bags used nationwide each year, a high percentage of them being one of a limited variety of Glad bags. For Clorox to produce a new specification of bag, they would need to expect to sell many many millions of them. Just ain't gonna happen. :chillout:

This is what a certain group in the village wanted. You have to pay weather you recycle or not. You have no choice.

Johnm, The bags in the N. Atlanta burbs were paper and were a big pain in the arse when used for large amounts of leaves. We lived in Dunwoody and filled 120 30 gallon plastic bags one weekend. When the paper bags came into play, it was a bear but understandable.

Tony:
Doesn't this come under the category of uninstantiated rumor and subject to the overboard rule, as in "dump it?"

So if anyone has a link please provide one. Also Tony my wife will point out to you the employee of PUBLIX should you request to ask her to substantiate her statements. I can't see this employee lying as it could cost him/her there job. In that case why dump it? Also please note that the UPC code mentioned in TV Sun does not exist. So whats up. http://www.upcdatabase.com/itemform.asp

Hopefully, Tony is still asleep. It is only 5:36 in San Diego. I'm sure he will take some sort of appropriate action when he wakes up and sees this.
I don't mean to sound mean, but I truly can't believe anyone would even believe a story like this. As Muncle said, it is not economically responsible for a major company such as Clorox to make a specialty item that would only be used in a very small market. Now, it might be possible that a deal was made that if The Villages made these specific garbage bags mandatory there would be a kickback of some sort for this. Even so, I really doubt that would occur and it certainly wouldn't be as much as $0.07 per box or per 100 or per whatever. Some things in life just don't make sense. These bags have been around for quite awhile. They are recyclable although Glad won't take them back because recycling them is cost prohibitive (they are made out of recyclable materials, though). The Villages isn't the only township to require them for recycling.

In lBarrington, Illinois (where we live) we used to use paper bags for recycles. They were a pain because if it rained, the bags got wet and broke. We were then given big bins (one for trash and one for recycles) and it is a lot easier. If the proposed bags are paper, they are not good. If they are plastic, they will contribute more plastic and defeat the purpose. Hopefully, you can check into getting bins instead of bags. Bags are expensive too.

Up here in sunny Potland, Maine, we have been using these trash bags for years. The cost is $7.50 for six bags. The idea is to get us to recycle as much as possible to avoid using too many bags. Thus cutting down on the actual trash that is not recycable. You would be surprised as to how much time you spend breaking down boxes for the cardboard, taking reusable bags to the grocery store, etc. We also have bottle redemption, glass, tin, paper and plastic bins to sort each week, and its really great when it rains, they won't take wet paper products, so we have to put in special bag and cannot weigh more than 30#. It really isn't that bad, just the cost of the bags.

There are obviously some advantages to using separate bins to put out your trash and recyclables as Pili and others have cited as well as disadvantages of bags. I'd like to address some of the disadvantages of bins.
a. Initial cost. Somebody has to pay for one or two bins for each unit in TV, depending on how trash is handled. That would be over 50,000-100,000 tubs (plastic?) that one way or another we, the residents, would pay for. If they are "provided free" by TV or the trash people, we'll still pay for them down the road. b. Space. Today you have a trash can in your kitchen. Under the bin system, you're going to need to keep another container somewhere. I have ample room in my 2-car and golf cart garage, but a lot of people have the 1 1/2 car garage that is already filled with the car and cart and a ton of detritus. c. Cleanliness. In the existing system, you put a tied bag on the curb at night. It rains and the wind blows (and it does blow hard here at times) but the sealed plastic bags keep the trash fairly protected. Occasionally a critter will tear open a bag, but not often at all. With bins, critters have a blast and possibly more critters appear. Florida winds come through and your loose trash is distributed evenly among your neighbors' yards. d. Neighborhood appearance. In today's system, you put out a bag sometime before bed. Look down the street at night and there are bags at every driveway. Next morning, you awaken and all are gone. All is neat and clean. As we are a very mixed community, we've an awful lot of folks who drop in for weekends or short stays and take off for a time. Quite often, the last thing they do as they leave is to put out trash for pickup the next day or even occasionally 2 days later. With bins, they sit there until someone takes them back into the house. I know mine would be there at least until noon --- don't do mornings. For snowflakes and the like, the bins would stay on the curb until their next visit or they were blown away. Not conducive to a neat neighborhood. There's good points about both systems, but a lot of things need to be considered.

I prefer the bags over the bins for the reasons stated above.
I keep my garbage bag in a garbage can in the garage and fill it and then take it outside on Sunday and Wednesday. Now - if I DO decide to recycle I will have two gagage cans in the garage that I will fill. Unfortunately the recycleable one will get fuller since it is once a week and I will now need three garbage cans to take care of the garbage. Fortunately the recycling is not mandatory so I can still get by with the the one can/bag. Unfortunately, my monthly garbage cost still goes up $1.47 a month. Some things just suck.
