We recently saw the Credence tribute band. They were excellent. Saw the Queen knock off band in December, not so much.

Great topic but I have to disagree with the OP. I enjoy tribute bands and I've attended a few here in The Villages, mostly at the Savanah Center but some at the Sharon.

Great music should never stopped being played by live musicians at concert halls. To say otherwise is like saying Franz Schubert's 21st piano sonata (my favorite), should never be played in a concert hall, because Schubert's not around to perform it. Although I admit we don't even have any recordings of Schubert playing it.

I've seen Fleetwood Mac, John Denver, Abby Road, and a few others I can't think of now, but I enjoyed them all and haven't seen a bad one so far. Tickets were cheap and easy to get, unlike back in the day. This month, I'm seeing the Moody Blues and the Roy Orbison/ Buddy Holly thing($75 for that latter one, ouch!).

You know who they are by knowing their passing years ago.

Yes, I realize the great ones are gone, and let them lye in piece.

Being older and hearing the original recordings all my life and attending expensive live performances by the pretenders just don't cut with me.

I guess as a kid, I attended to many great original concerts from the great ones.

Your Thoughts Please
If you dislike Tribute Bands, you have 2 choices: (1) Don’t go and listen. (2) Go listen to local bands. While I have had to hear a number of the original bands, I appreciate the efforts of the Tribute Bands…some are very good.

I've had to sit through a "tribute" here it was so sad. I wanted to leave but didn't want to embarrass anyone (musicians respect). What is worse is when people are charged good money to see the debacle
And some of us appreciate your sophisticated musical tastes because it opens seats for those that enjoy live entertainment and are ok with those offerings.

You nailed it! Some tribute bands are all over the place....try and find a Queen Tribute band that can cut it (or Pink Floyd)....good luck!

We went to see 3 Dog Night about 8 years ago…….they were awful! They butchered their own songs, most in the band had out grown their voices. I would rather see a good tribute band of skilled musicians and singers perform the oldy but goodies the way I remembered.

Like when Jefferson Airplane turned into Jefferson Starship which turned into Starship which splintered into two new groups, one of which is Jefferson Starship and the other is just Starship. Although my sister is good friends with the keyboard player - it's still not the same. There's no Marty Balin (RIP), Kantner, Casady, Chaquico, Aguilar, Jorma Kaukonen, or Grace Slick. They're not a "tribute" band. They're a descendant of a descendant of a descendant of a descendant of the original. A well-diluted derivative. They're a good band, but it's like sucking on lemons to call them Jefferson Airplane.
Jefferson Starship is still touring with one original member of that Airplane spin-off, David Freiberg.

Was wondering why you put an RIP next to Balin but not Kantner.

Yes is touring with no original members - basically a tribute band - but still getting top dollar because they’re (mis)using the Yes name. Steve Howe is part of the “classic” line-up, but not an original. The Grassroots are also touring with no original members. Probably lots more bands are trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

The Beach Boys, Guess Who, Uriah Heep, Yardbirds, the Strawbs, Procol Harum, Marshall Tucker and Jethro Tull come right to mind as examples of bands hanging on by the skin of their teeth touring with one original member. Fortunately for the last four, the original member is the lead singer, thereby preserving much of the original vibe.

What’s remaining of the Stones…and Bob Dylan…are so painful to watch and hear (imo) that I’d much rather see a tribute band.

On the other hand, Steve Hackett, Genesis’ original guitarist, is doing an admirable job keeping Genesis’ classic ‘70s period alive with a stand in who’s quite nearly as good as Collins and Gabriel, and that’s saying a heck of a lot.

I’d rather hear covers than nothing at all, plus some are really good AND I can sing along since I know all the words

Seeing Steve Hackett in Orlando, the Plaza, on April 20th. He was the guitarist for Genesis, and plays their music from Trespass to Wind and Wuthering. Amazing job by the band. Not to be missed. I saw Steve 7 times in Chicago.

I thought your handle might be a nod to my third favorite band of all time after the Beatles and Stones. Got hooked after hearing Fountain of Salmacis in the early '70s on free form radio. Then Musical Box and Suppers Ready sealed the deal.

I've seen Steve many times and I'll be seeing him again in Orlando and Ft Lauderdale next month. With Nad Sylvan filling in for Peter and Phil, it's almost like the real thing, but not quite. But I couldn't imagine a better choice than Nad. You're in for a treat if you haven't seen this line-up yet.

This is from last Wednesday's concert by John Lodge (of the Moody Blues) and his band. He also brought out Jon Davison to help with the vocals on a few of the songs at the end. Jon Davison (not Jon Anderson) has been the lead vocalist of rock band Yes since 2012.

We enjoyed the performance. A few thoughts.

John Lodge still has it. His voice is not the same but I didn't expect it to be. I would have been OK with a younger musician taking over the role. I love their music more than the musicians. Jon Davison did a great job as you will see in the video. He's the one on the right.

The song list was a little strange. I didn't recognized several tunes. The last few times I saw the Moody Blues the song list was almost exactly what the performed at Red Rocks in 1992.

I would have preferred they performed at the Sharon which has a better sound system. A lot of the tunes seemed to reverberate very loudly.

I was a little surprised at how short the show was at just over an hour, with no opening band and prices around $80 for what is basically a tribute band.

As a lifelong Moodies fan, I've always preferred their "deep cuts." For me, that's the case with pretty much all bands - the true treasure lies in the lesser known songs, in my opinion, so I was overjoyed to hear the more obscure songs.

They were having trouble selling tickets for this. Numerous giveaways and plugs on the radio.
