It’s not just cars, people drive 15 mph in their golf carts and are oblivious to the string of golf carts behind them. These same people will give it more gas when you try to go around them which makes it tougher to pass. Same thing in cars, I’ve been behind cars going 10 mph slower than the speed limit and when a passing lane appears, they magically go 20mph faster so you can’t pass.
Slow drivers are more dangerous than faster drivers imo. There is a reason we don’t have autobahn speeds here in the states. Over there, if you are in the left lane and you cause a car to brake or slow down, you are ticketed, even if you are going 180mph or faster. I wish they would ticket slow drivers here and especially drivers that don’t know how to navigate the roundabouts.

I agree. Also, the left lane is NOT a travel lane. The left lane is for passing and exiting. It is FL law, I have posted the statue previously. All people need to be polite and follow the rules of the road and not everyone who lives here is retired.

OMG….just for clarification, in my original post I was NOT talking about driving on a road with a golf cart path alongside the road. I am talking about an incident driving in SS on a road that does NOT have a golf cart lane along the side of the street and you have to share the road with golf carts! It isn’t the first time that type of incident happened either. I’ve passed hundreds and hundreds of golf carts who were driving in the golf cart lane along the side of the road in different villages. #BeWell

...Or death. And golf carts are certainly not immune. Deaths due to golf cart accidents , as well as serious injuries, are certainly not unknown in TV.

A big part of the problem is that there are Villagers, in cars and in golf carts, who have no business being behind the wheel in either one. Aging is a process of loss; things like depth perception, peripheral vision, reaction time, and judgment, as well as for some the losses that come with dementia means that there are some dangerous people out there. I've overheard conversations where a person claims that he "is as good a driver as he ever was" even though he is pushing 80+ years. It is why airline pilots are mandatorily retired at age 60. Sure, there are some who could keep flying to 65 or even 70 but those people are rare, and losses in ability are inevitable.

It is why I've always felt that mandatory retesting for a driver's license (written AND road tests) should be implemented every "x" number of years after a person reaches age 65; say every three years from 65 to 75, and every two years thereafter. It would go a long way toward making the roads and MMPs around the villages a lot safer.

I drive sorta on the slower side. I also try to be as considerate as possible to other drivers.

That being said, you stand a better chance of winning the Lottery and getting Hit By Lightning while collecting your winnings. People are going to drive the way they always have or worse. We are in a Retirement Community. Older People = Hard To Change Lifelong Habits!

Love the car on Wednesday, that floored it to pass a stopped lawn trailer turning right, waiting for a pedestrian to cross the street. The car crossed the double yellow line to pass just as a oncoming car came around the corner. The car quickly jam on the brakes, pull back in the lane and then literally ran over top of the trailer of the lawn guy.

Thank God his truck had its wheels straight if not he would’ve been pushed into the pedestrian. Now that’s what I call somebody in a hurry and could care less about anybody else.

Oh by the way he lived in Hemingway, pretty angry that they had to tow his car. I was sad that the lawn guy lost some his equipment and was getting yelled at by the guy that rear ended him.

Well for us residents retiring here it’s OUR community and if we Villagers slow down a bit and drive safer maybe everyone else will take our lead and just might drive a little slower and safer too. The posted speed, is the LIMIT, not the required speed. Even that is subject to the road conditions, weather and traffic amongst other variable factors. If someone wishes to exercise caution, respect it and have some patience. In 40+ years of law enforcement , never had occasion to cite some one for 5 under the LIMIT. Minimum speed on a limited access highway is another matter. Not relevant here.

First of all, thank you for your service I agree wholeheartedly with you within TV on residential roads and the boulevards. I notice you avoided referring to limited access highways. As I'm sure you know after 40 years in law enforcement, the #1 proximate cause of accidents on those highways is changing lanes. And the number one cause of excessive lane changing is someone not keeping up with the flow of traffic---especially those that park in the far left hand lane at 55. Sometimes it seems like there's a magnet in the left lane that attracts those drivers. I'd like to know what you think, as a LEO, of a post from about 4 years ago. The person stated that they always drive 30 in the furthest left lane of 466 in the 45 zone because THEY believe that is fast enough. And while they were probably never IN an accident, I wonder how many they CAUSED.

Invariably the major cause of limited access highway incidents is speed, excess out scores slow. Left lane campers are a real problem and it being a violation is usually posted on the roadside.
Number one advice is be aware and use your mirrors frequently. The roads are increasingly populated with speed racers slaloming through the traffic lanes. Remember for example, 5 miles an hour faster for a 3 hour highway trip will only result in an average difference of 15 miles, or maybe 10 minutes.
Bottom line just slow down, be aware of traffic, car or cart and everyone goes home.

I hate to disagree with a LEO of your extensive experience, however, the following excerpts are from 4 articles on the subject:

***Most traffic deaths are from driving too slow. About 40,100 Americans lose their lives to traffic accidents every year.

***According to a report published by the Daily Star, the number of people who are killed or seriously injured in road accidents has been steadily increasing since 2019, due to slow drivers.

***Driving slower than the traffic that surrounds you is more likely to cause an accident than if you were speeding. Driving 5 miles per hour slower than the traffic around you is actually more likely to cause an accident than if you were driving 5 miles per hour faster than the drivers around you.

***Slow drivers in all lanes can cause other drivers to weave in and out of traffic around you, which increases the chance of an accident.
It’s been proven statistically (e.g., the “Crash Risk Curve”) that traffic accidents are caused much more often by drivers who are driving below the speed limit than those who are driving too fast. And yes, there are some articles that state excess speed is the major cause, but slow seems to outnumber them 4:1. I'm sure you've observed the zoo on an interstate when somebody is driving slow in the left lane. And I just think it's that much worse when someone does it intentionally because they want to impose their idea of an appropriate speed on everyone else.
